Audi Australia has quietly done something rather sensible and possibly slightly clever: it has bolstered the Q5 family with two new drivetrains, the 200 kW TFSI quattro and the 270 kW e-hybrid quattro, both arriving in showrooms from Q1 2026. The headline is this – the plug-in hybrid comes at the same price as the petrol model, which is the sort of pricing trick that makes accountants smile and buyers feel oddly smug. Prices start from $96,900.

Refined Performance: Q5 TFSI quattro 200 kW sport

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo producing 200 kW and 400 Nm, married to a seven-speed S tronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive. It is sprightly, efficient and entirely aware of its responsibilities. The S line exterior package, 20-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof and Matrix LED headlights with selectable light signatures all come as standard, and there is even a clever projection light under the spoiler to help when opening the tailgate hands-free.

Inside is where the Q5 keeps its dignity. Leather-appointed seats and aluminium inlays give a feel of quiet competence, and the cabin tech reads like a small electronics shop: a 14.5-inch OLED central display teamed with an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit plus, wireless smartphone interface and Audi connect plus. Safety is not treated as an optional extra either, with adaptive cruise control, Audi side assist, speed sign recognition, 360-degree cameras and proactive occupant protection included.

Efficiency Meets Performance: Q5 e-hybrid quattro 270 kW

The plug-in hybrid version is the bit that makes you sit up. It combines the same 2.0-litre TFSI with an electric motor to produce a combined 270 kW and 500 Nm. That translates into 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, which is brisk enough to embarrass a fair few hot hatches. The battery stores 45 percent more energy than before and provides an electric-only WLTP range of up to 82 kilometres, a practical number for daily drives. Charging is improved too, with three-phase AC charging at up to 11 kW, allowing a full charge in around 2.5 hours.

Operation is straightforward, with EV and Hybrid modes and steering-wheel paddles to adjust regenerative braking when you want to be theatrical about it. Crucially, the e-hybrid comes with more equipment than the petrol car while costing the same, which is good news for sensible buyers. Visual extras include a black exterior styling package with anthracite rings, privacy glass, 20-inch Audi Sport wheels and red brake callipers. Practical touches such as auxiliary air-conditioning for pre-conditioning the cabin and charging hardware for domestic and public sockets are included.

Technology And Safety

Both new variants benefit from Audi’s Android-based MMI panoramic touch display for intuitive control, plus digital radio and wireless charging. The Q5 range carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including 360-degree cameras with kerb view, park assist plus, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, Audi side assist and proactive occupant protection. There are nine airbags, including a front centre airbag, which is something you will appreciate later.

Ownership And Warranty

Ownership comes with a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and six years of roadside assistance. The e-hybrid’s battery carries an eight-year, 160,000 km warranty. Owners also receive membership to Audi Experience for the duration of the warranty, which provides access to national events and other perks.

Market Introduction And Pricing

The new Q5 TFSI quattro and Q5 e-hybrid quattro models will arrive in Australian showrooms from Q1 2026. Manufacturer list pricing is as follows, excluding dealer delivery and government statutory charges: the Audi Q5 SUV TFSI quattro 200 kW sport is $96,900; the Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro 270 kW is $96,900; the Q5 Sportback TFSI quattro 200 kW sport is $100,400; and the Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro 270 kW is $100,400.

If you like sensible cars that also have a twinkle in their eye, Audi has just made the Q5 a lot harder to ignore.
