The 2026 Genesis GV80 has arrived with a flourish, and at the top of the pile are two rather dramatic newcomers: the GV80 Black and the GV80 Coupe Black. Genesis has simplified the line-up into a single, fully loaded Signature specification and added a few tasty tech and trim changes. You can have one from $120,000 MLP.

Range And Variants

For 2026 the GV80 returns with two engine choices. The four cylinder 2.5T-GDi makes a comeback, offering a sensible mix of power and economy, while the twin-turbo 3.5 litre V6 remains the range-topping option. The Black and Black Coupe models are offered exclusively as 3.5T all-wheel drive Signature variants. There is also an optional six-seat interior for those who like their luxury with a little more elbow room, and the rear-seat entertainment package that used to be offered has been dropped.

The Black Editions

If you like your luxury to look like it has been dipped in midnight, the Black and Black Coupe will please. Both are built on the Signature 3.5T AWD and come only in a black exterior with black Nappa leather interiors. Genesis designers apparently went a little obsessive over black, testing countless shades and textures to see how they caught the light. The result is a cohesive, dramatic theme inside and out, with elements such as black 22 inch wheels, dark-tinted badging, a black G-Matrix grille and black body cladding outside. Inside you get quilted Nappa leather with suede accents, Black Ash real wood trim, exclusive black bezels and switchgear, and black aluminium speaker grilles. In a nod to sustainability the leather and trim dye use recycled carbon black derived from waste tyres.

Digital Key 2.0

For the first time in Australia Genesis fits Digital Key 2.0 to the GV80. It lets you lock, unlock and start the car from a smartphone or smartwatch and uses both near-field communication and ultra-wideband technology. In plain terms you can approach the car and operate it from roughly one metre away when using UWB enabled devices, or tap the handle with an NFC phone to gain entry and start the engine. The key lives in your phone wallet after you link the vehicle to an active Genesis Connected Services account. The feature can be shared to up to 15 devices, does not rely on a mobile network to operate, and in some cases will work even if the phone battery is very low, although compatibility depends on the device.

Powertrains And Chassis

The reintroduced 2.5T-GDi four cylinder delivers 224 kW and 422 Nm, aiming to balance brisk performance with reasonable consumption. Its architecture includes dual fuel injection, dual continuously variable valve timing with an electrically controlled intake actuator, and a single turbocharger assisted by a tuned intake system to boost low end torque. The 2.5T is Euro 5 compliant, runs on 95 RON premium unleaded and is rated at a combined cycle fuel consumption of 10.4 L/100 km. The 3.5T V6 remains the harder hitter and is the sole engine for the Black models.

Genesis’ all-wheel drive is rear biased and uses an electronic variable torque split clutch with active torque control to apportion drive where it is needed. Ride comfort is aided by Hydro G-Bushings in the front suspension, a technology that traps fluid inside the bushings to absorb vibrations more effectively than traditional rubber. Braking is handled by large monoblock front calipers for a more planted feel and stronger stopping power.

Comfort, Technology And Safety

The Signature specification is comprehensively equipped. You’ll find a sprawling integrated 27 inch OLED multimedia display with navigation, an 18 speaker Bang & Olufsen system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital centre mirror, and a 12 inch head up display. Comfort features include 18 way adjustable front seats with ergo motion, heated and ventilated seats front and rear, Road Active Noise Cancelling and multi-zone climate management. Safety and driver assistance are extensive, covering Highway Driving Assist 2, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist 2, Surround View Monitor and Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 among others.
