Australia is about to get a new kind of ute: rugged, brash and secretly clever. Chery has previewed the Stockman, a dual-cab pickup that marries a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel to a Super Hybrid system. The result is a machine that wants to tow a caravan, haul gear and sneak into the grocery run on electric power without making you choose between torque and thrift.
At face value the numbers are the kind of overkill you learn to appreciate. Combined output is 350kW and 800Nm, with up to 100 kilometres of electric-only range (NEDC). Four-wheel drive is standard, and the hybrid architecture is billed to give genuine electric commuting while keeping the grunt for towing and off-road work. In short: power for the job and a battery for the school run.
The Stockman is engineered as a proper workhorse. Braked towing capacity is 3,500kg, unbraked 750kg, backed by a sturdy chassis, double wishbone front suspension and heavy-duty leaf springs at the rear. Add selectable front, centre and rear differential locks and 247mm of ground clearance on standard all-terrain tyres, and you have a ute that will not flinch at rough tracks.
It is also generous where it counts. The Stockman measures 5,450mm long with a 3,250mm wheelbase, a 1,560mm square cargo tub and an overall width of 2,010mm. In practice that translates to proper space for tools, gear and a weekend’s worth of inflatable dinghies.
Inside, the cabin leans modern and practical with large touchscreen interfaces, an organised layout and enough room to lose a few passengers without them complaining. Tech includes a projected head-up display and other driver aids that play nicely with the hybrid system to keep the real-world daily drive relaxed.
