Chery Australia has turned a deluge of more than 20,000 name ideas into a tidy shortlist of nine contenders for its diesel plug-in hybrid ute. The public now gets the final say, with voting open from 5 May to 19 May. The prize for the winning suggestion is the very first ute when it lands later this year.

The Shortlist

Outrider: A name that summons the scout who rides ahead, promising a ute intended to lead the pack with capability, efficiency and range.

Orca: Big, clever and adaptable, this sea-hunter-inspired choice hints at strength, teamwork and a machine built to perform across work and wild.

Empty pickup bed with integrated rack and textured liner.

Ironbark: Borrowing the sobriety of a legendary eucalyptus, Ironbark suggests toughness and longevity, the kind of name that looks at a worksite and says I belong here.

Bushwalker: Simple and home in the wild, Bushwalker evokes a vehicle that feels native to trails, campsites and open highway alike.

Stockman: A name rooted in real Australian grit, calling to mind endurance, reliability and the hard yards of long-distance rural work.

Longreach: Part place, part promise. This one hints at distance and durability, the idea of covering a long reach with diesel-electric efficiency.

Ridgeback: Short, strong and rugged. Ridgeback packs a sense of backbone and off-road intent into two syllables.

Terra: Latin for earth, Terra is unpretentious and versatile, easy to badge across variants such as Terra Mud or Terra Beach to match different Aussie conditions.

Mate: As close to a national spirit animal as a name can get, Mate aims to be the everyday reliable companion you reach for without thinking.

What Happens Next

A Chery Australia spokesperson said the volume and variety of entries made shortlisting both exciting and difficult, and that the names reflect what Australians expect from a modern ute as new energy technology arrives in the segment.

Voting runs from 5 May to 19 May. The full shortlist and voting details are available on the company website, and the winning name will be announced ahead of the vehicle’s arrival later this year.
