BYD has just ticked over a tidy milestone in Australia, delivering its 100,000th new vehicle as a SHARK 6 Premium ute was handed to a Brisbane buyer. No fanfare here, just confetti, keys and the increasingly familiar sight of an electric or hybrid badge on driveways across the country.

Since first hitting Australian shores in November 2022 with the ATTO 3, the brand has been on a tear. The line-up now stretches to 10 models and the dealer map covers the nation. That is rapid expansion by anyone’s standards and it helps explain why this anniversary did not come as a surprise.

The family-sized SEALION 7 has emerged as the crowd favourite among fully electric models, while the compact ATTO 2 has been stealing hearts with a mix of tech, style and attainable pricing. Meanwhile the SHARK 6 range has become the go-to pickup for private buyers wanting plug-in hybrid power – and the range keeps growing with tradie-focused cab-chassis and a performance pickup adding more muscle and towing capability.

People Turn Up, Cars Keep Coming

Senior company figures flew in for the planned visit and one of them personally handed over the keys. It is the kind of neat, human moment that makes a milestone feel real – not just another number on a slide deck.

The chief operating officer described the past three and a half years as remarkable, pointing to a nationwide sales and service network of more than 100 centres and plans to keep growing. Translation: if you buy one, there is a decent chance there will be someone to service it nearby.

So where does this leave the market? For rivals it is a reminder that buyers will choose new energy vehicles that look good, do the job and do not demand a second mortgage. For the rest of us it means more choice, more infrastructure and fewer excuses to stick with old petrol habits. The 100,000th delivery is less a finish line and more a very loud starting pistol.
