The BMW X5 has had a haircut, a makeover and a tech upgrade. The fifth-generation X5 trades soft familiarity for a bolder, more monolithic face, borrows Neue Klasse design cues and, crucially, arrives with an electric iX5 that wants to make small SUVs feel very inadequate.

Design That Demands The Road

Think upright front end, a vertical kidney grille that will not be ignored and adaptive LED headlights with a double-X light signature. Sculpted surfaces, muscular wheel arches and flush winglet door handles give the X5 a stronger stance. Wheel choices run from 21 to 23 inches and there are eleven paint finishes on the menu, including four BMW Individual colours for those who like their toys bespoke.

Cabin And Next Generation Tech

The interior has been tidied and treated to a modern wraparound layout with premium materials like glass accents and, for the first time, natural slate surfaces. New X-pattern stitching, redesigned steering wheels and a three dimensional ambient light strip add some theatre. The headline tech is BMW Panoramic iDrive on BMW Operating System X. Expect BMW Panoramic Vision projected across the lower windscreen, a 3D head up display, a 17.9-inch central display with QuickSelect and a new passenger screen for streaming or work in the front seat. Interaction mixes touch, haptics and voice with an enhanced intelligent assistant doing the heavy lifting.

Electrification And Performance

BMW has gone broad with propulsion. The range covers petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild hybrid assistance, a plug-in hybrid and the headline act, the all electric iX5. The iX5 60 xDrive uses sixth generation eDrive tech and an 800 volt architecture, producing 425 kW and 805 Nm. That gets you 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, WLTP range claimed up to 845 kilometres and peak charging rates up to 460 kW. The plug in X5 50e xDrive is pitched at 360 kW with about 102 km of pure electric range, while traditional six cylinder variants keep the fuel crowd happy with efficient mild hybrid assistance.

When You Can Buy One

Production starts in August 2026 at the Spartanburg plant, with combustion models rolling out globally in November 2026 and battery electric and plug in hybrids arriving in early 2027. Locally, X5 40d xDrive and X5 40 xDrive are due in Q4 2026. Detailed pricing and specifications will be released ahead of that.

In short, the X5 you thought you knew has been sharpened, souped up and made much cleverer. It is still an X5, only with more tech, more choices and an electric sibling that will not be ignored.
