Hyundai has gone and built something properly raucous from its electric stable. The IONIQ 6 N was named the 2026 World Performance Car during the World Car Finals at the New York International Auto Show, proving that electrified machines can be both sensible and unhinged when required.

It is the second time a Hyundai performance IONIQ has taken the crown, following the IONIQ 5 N in 2024, and it brings Hyundai’s total World Car haul to nine awards over the program’s 22 year history. That is not bad at all for a brand once accused of sensible commuting machines.

The Competition

The final three for the performance prize read like an odd couple of speed: the BMW M2 CS, the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, and the Hyundai IONIQ 6 N. Judges had to pick an automotive orchestra where each player was loudly convinced it was the soloist.

How The Winner Was Chosen

A jury of 98 international automotive journalists from 33 countries cast secret ballots after driving the contenders and evaluating them as part of their ongoing work. The vote was independently tabulated by a global accounting firm to make sure the results were beyond reproach.

To be eligible, performance contenders must be built in volumes of at least 1,000 units a year, be overtly performance focused, and be on sale in multiple major markets across at least two continents during the eligibility window. In short, these are real cars you could actually buy.

The Finals were powered by a major performance parts sponsor and staged as part of the New York International Auto Show, with the jurors’ road test journey showcased on World Car TV. The program also leaned on longstanding industry partners to bring the season to a tidy, sped up conclusion.

Call it a minor revolution or a well timed thunderclap, but the IONIQ 6 N’s win makes the point clear. Electric performance is no longer a promise, it is a proper, tyre squealing reality.
