If you thought the BT-50 was merely a sensible ute for sensible people, 2026 has decided to spice things up. Mazda has polished, bolted and decal-stamped two new model grades onto the range, and the result is pleasingly shouty.
The headline act is the return of the Thunder, now exclusively paired with the dependable 3.0L 4-cylinder diesel and 4X4 drivetrain. It carries everything from the GT pickup but adds a dose of attitude and practicality, so it will happily tackle a muddy track or sit smugly outside a beach cafe.

Thunder arrives trimmed with a single hoop bull bar and Lightforce Beast driving lights as standard, which is industry speak for meaningfully better visibility when it matters. Reinforced anti-slip side steps make ingress less of a wrestling match, and the whole package feels purpose-built rather than just accessorised.
At the back there is a long-legged steel sports bar and a manual roller tonneau cover to keep your kit dry and unpilfered. Gloss black door handles and a bespoke Thunder decal finish the look, because if you are going to shout, you should at least look good doing it.
Boss Joins The Lineup
Joining Thunder is the new Boss grade, another 3.0L 4X4 pickup that builds on the XT specification. The Boss prefers its bling subtle: gloss black door and tailgate handles, gloss black mirrors and a black steel sports bar. Practicality is not forgotten, with a tub liner and side steps fitted as standard.

Mazda has also added a 360-degree camera to XTR, GT and SP pickup variants, which is the sort of modern convenience that turns reversing into a non-event. The BT-50 line-up now stretches to 20 variants, so there is a version for almost every use case, from jobsite workhorse to weekend explorer.
Colours, Pricing And Availability
The 2026 palette keeps things rugged and restrained with Red Earth Metallic, Sailing Blue Metallic, True Black Mica, Geode White Pearl, Concrete Grey Mica, Ingot Silver Metallic and Ice White. Metallic, mica and pearl finishes carry a $695 premium paint fee.
The updated BT-50 is in showrooms now. The Boss has an introductory Drive Away Price of $58,990, while the range stretches up to the Thunder at $78,400. If you want a practical truck that also looks like it means business, this lot gives you choice and a bit of swagger to boot.
