Maybach’s New SL 680: A Convertible For The Posh Elite
If you believe convertibles exist solely to soothe fragile egos, the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 will happily prove you wrong while quietly taking your wallet and leaving you smug. It is a topless grand tourer done by people who treat aluminium like silk and horsepower like a polite suggestion.
Performance
At its heart is a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo that grunts out 430 kilowatts and 800 newton metres, sends drive to all four wheels via a fully variable all-wheel drive system and rockets you to 100 kilometres per hour in 4.1 seconds. That is ludicrous for a car that will also caress broken tarmac into something bearable. Active Ride Control suspension, rear-axle steering with 2.5 degrees of angle and a SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with a dedicated Maybach drive programme make sure it behaves when you want it to and indulges when you do not.
Design And Craft
The SL 680 arrives swaddled in Maybach-specific cues: an illuminated radiator shell, vertical struts emblazoned with MAYBACH lettering, a central chrome bonnet strip and chrome detailing that could double as jewellery. Choose Garnet Red or Opalite White MAGNO with the contrasting Obsidian Black bonnet if you prefer obvious drama. For those who like things a touch ridiculous in a glorious way, there is the PixelPaint bonnet option where a pattern is printed, coated, sanded by hand and coated again until it looks like it was painted by angels obsessed with tiny pixels.
Interior And Technology
Inside it is more Maybach than you can shake a soft top at. Nappa leather, a MANUFAKTUR DINAMICA microfibre roof liner, embossed floral upholstery and a Burmester 3D system with 17 speakers and 1220 watts of output mean occupants will be cocooned, serenaded and gently massaged into submission. The 11.9-inch MBUX display with augmented reality navigation and 5G keeps the driver politically correct and technologically smug, while 64-colour ambient lighting allows you to match the cabin mood to the sunset or whatever cocktail you imagine you are sipping.
Pricing
The SL 680 is priced from $463,900 MRLP. If you want additional splendour, the Maybach bonnet pattern is $16,900, MANUFAKTUR Exclusive paint is $24,300 and the 21-inch Maybach multi-spoke forged wheels are $12,900. The headline price includes GST and applicable luxury car tax for the base model but excludes on-road costs, because of course it does.
In short, the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 is outrageously fast, unmistakably plush and obsessively detailed. It is the kind of car that will make sensible people roll their eyes and very sensible people reach for their cheque books.
