BMW M Motorsport And WRT Return To Bathurst In 2026

TDP |

Team WRT and BMW M Motorsport are heading back to Mount Panorama for the 2026 edition of the Bathurst 12 Hour, and they are bringing the kind of firepower that makes rivals swallow their Tim Tams in silence. After a dominant 1-2 finish last year, BMW will be defending not just a crown but a mood. Two factory-run BMW M4 GT3 EVOs will go under the WRT umbrella in the premier category, while a BMW M4 GT3 EVO entered by a Chinese squad will contest the Bronze class.

The 2025 season began at Bathurst like a symphony, with BMW taking the top two steps and then converting that momentum into wins across the Intercontinental GT Challenge. That haul netted BMW the manufacturers title and handed the drivers crown to the man who will be back to try and repeat the trick. In short, the benchmark has been set and everyone else had better bring a decent calculator.

Line-ups And Cars

Car number 32 will field a familiar champion alongside two formidable teammates. Expect a blend of raw speed and tactical nous from this trio – the sort of mix that made last year so uncomfortable for the opposition. Car number 46 will reunite the Brazilian victor from last year with a Swiss campaigner and an Italian who is no stranger to big race weekends and big crowds. In the Bronze class, car number 89 will be driven by a German making his Bathurst debut, joined by a Dutch racer and a Chinese co-driver.

BMW M Motorsport is therefore represented by six factory drivers across the two WRT entries, plus the KRC-run entry in Bronze. It is a neat arrangement: two shots at overall glory and a third at class success, all in the same model and with substantially the same intentions.

What The Drivers Say

The defending champion in the top WRT car has been clear in tone – delighted with the team composition, comfortable with his co-drivers and fully focused on defending the title. He made a point of saying that sharing the car with familiar faces adds a calmness you cannot buy, and that repeating a Bathurst triumph is a special challenge he intends to embrace.

His South African teammate, contesting his first works outing for BMW, spoke with the sort of wide-eyed optimism you get from someone about to take the keys to a very fast toy. He reminded everyone that he has won at Bathurst before, knows the place inside out and is perfectly aware of the pressure that comes with being part of a defending champion line-up. Still, he insisted that camaraderie and mutual respect between the three drivers will be a major asset.

The Brazilian winner from last year described Bathurst as one of the most satisfying and demanding races on the calendar, and made no secret of wanting to stand on the top step again. The Italian returning to the same entry called the circuit fantastic, noted how much he enjoys the weekend, and set a podium finish as the clear objective. He highlighted the learning opportunity of being paired with two experienced team-mates, and promised to enjoy the experience while pushing for results.

In Bronze class, the German who will be making his Mount Panorama debut sounded like someone about to sample a very large roller coaster. He plans to spend plenty of time in the simulator to tame the so called mini Nordschleife, and said he is relishing the chance to start the season with a high profile endurance event after Daytona. He praised the KRC outfit, said there are familiar faces within the team, and suggested they can be competitive in class.

Looking Ahead

For BMW M Motorsport this is both a defence and a statement. Two factory cars in the top category and a third in Bronze mean maximum visibility and maximum opportunity. The team arrives having already proven it can turn Bathurst speed into a season-long advantage. Opponents will be sharpening setups and study laps, but WRT and the factory will arrive with experience, a line-up built for endurance and a car that has already done the homework.

Expect pace, strategy and perhaps a touch of chaos on the mountain. Above all, expect a serious attempt to keep the trophies in familiar hands when the sun sets on Mount Panorama.
