Gothenburg, Sweden, 4 November 2025. Polestar is about to make life a little less frantic for anyone who finds motorway exits more stressful than they should be. The Swedish electric performance outfit will be the first carmaker to put Google Maps’ new live lane guidance straight on the 10.2-inch driver display of one of its cars, starting with the Polestar 4.

What The Feature Does

Think of it as a satnav that can see. Using Google’s on-board AI and a forward-facing camera, the system reads lane markings, road signs and other visual cues to figure out which lane the car is actually in. The display then highlights all the lanes that will get you to your destination, and shows which lane you are occupying right now. Visual prompts come with audio reminders so you are nudged to change lanes in good time, rather than performing last-minute gymnastics at the last junction.

Why It Fits Polestar

This is exactly the sort of thing that suits Polestar’s driver-focused user experience approach: neat, useful and designed to reduce stress. The company points out that integrating live lane guidance aligns with their goal of making navigation simpler and safer, cutting down on missed exits and frantic lane swaps.

How It Works And Where It Appears

The live lane guidance integrates with Google Maps navigation and uses the vehicle’s camera feed plus Google’s image analysis to determine lane position. The result is a fresh visualisation on the driver display that highlights the lanes relevant to your route and the one you are in. It is tailored for highway use initially, where split-second lane decisions matter most.

Updates And Availability

Polestar will deliver the feature via over-the-air updates, meaning owners do not need to visit a dealer to get it. The rollout begins in the coming months for Polestar 4 cars in the US and Sweden, with plans to expand to more markets and road types over time. The company says continuous software upgrades will remain a core part of how their cars improve after purchase.

Partnership Background

Polestar has worked with Google on in-car services since the first Google built-in models launched in 2020. This new lane guidance feature is framed as the latest step in that collaboration, aiming to raise the bar for in-car navigation across the industry.
