BYD has decided to speed things up. The new SEALION 8, a big, confident seven-seat SUV, has been rushed into Australia after a surge of interest. Think sleek European lines, room for the brood and enough technology to make other SUVs feel a bit old-fashioned.

Design And Local Suspension Tuning

This is not a thinly disguised import. The SEALION 8 has been designed with local suspension tuning to suit Australian roads, so it rides like someone who understands potholes and roundabouts. The exterior leans on European styling cues, while the cabin is roomy enough to swallow school runs, sport kits and holiday luggage without breaking a sweat.

Powertrain And Hybrid Performance

Under the skin sits BYD’s fifth-generation DM dual mode system with a claimed 46 percent thermal efficiency. The line-up includes Dynamic FWD, Dynamic AWD and Premium AWD. The AWD versions introduce BYD’s DM-p high-performance super hybrid platform and DiSus-C smart suspension to Australia for the first time – a 1.5T petrol engine working with twin electric motors for instantaneous response and EV-like smoothness. The system can switch between 2WD and AWD, delivering the shove of a performance SUV, the calm of an electric car and the refinement of something plush. Zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds is on the card.

Spec numbers: the Dynamic FWD combines 205 kW and 315 Nm with a 19 kWh battery offering up to 103 km electric-only (NEDC). The AWD models step up to a 35.6 kWh battery, around 152 km EV range, and total output of 359 kW and 675 Nm for genuinely brisk acceleration and surefooted traction.

Interior, Technology And Practicality

Inside feels half sanctuary, half command centre. A 15.6-inch touchscreen sits centre stage, backed by a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, wireless smartphone integration and a 21-speaker premium sound system that will fill the cabin with something approaching live music. Comfort is high on the list: front and rear massage seats, a 50 W wireless phone charger and up to 1,960 litres of boot space when you fold things down. Practical seven-seat motoring that does not skimp on indulgence.

Safety And Driver Assistance

Safety kit is comprehensive with nine airbags, a 360 degree camera and a full suite of intelligent driver assistance technologies designed to keep the family intact and the commute far less stressful.

Availability And Ordering

Expressions of interest are open now and orders will begin in December. Pricing will be revealed closer to launch, but BYD says it is fast-tracking the SEALION 8 to meet strong demand, positioning it as a flagship family SUV for those who want advanced hybrid tech without waiting around.
