BYD has announced that the SEALION 6 Premium Extended Range will be on sale from Monday 1 September. It arrives as the latest member of the SEALION 6 family, joining the recently introduced Dynamic Extended Range in the company’s extended-range lineup. More than 5,500 SEALION 6s have already been delivered to Australian customers this year, which is a fairly decent achievement for a car that does everything with sensible pragmatism rather than theatrical flair.

Availability And Market Position

This new Premium Extended Range variant bolts on to BYD’s claim to fame as a leading new energy vehicle maker. The strategy is simple. Give people more electric distance, keep refuelling rare, and make the whole package look like it belonged in a European design studio. It’s pitched at buyers who want plug-in capability without the usual compromises.

Battery And Real World Range

The headline figure here is a 26.6 kWh Blade Battery, which is 45 percent larger than the 18.3 kWh unit used in the Premium Standard Range. That increase pushes the EV-only range from roughly 80 km to almost 130 km under NEDC testing, though as always your actual mileage will depend on how heavy-footed you are. Combined with BYD’s DM-i hybrid system, the car can manage a combined driving range of around 1000 km. In plain terms, that means daily commutes can be done electrically most of the time while long trips stay entirely practical.

Performance And Fuel Efficiency

The Premium Extended Range does more than extend range. It also turns the SEALION 6 into something mildly exciting with a maximum output of 253 kW and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.5 seconds. That is proper quick for a family-orientated plug-in. For the fuel conscious, the headline economy is an astonishing 1.1 L per 100 km, which puts it well ahead of many conventional hybrids that often average north of 4.8 L per 100 km. With the average Australian commuting about 30 km a day, this model can act as an EV for everyday use and a hybrid for longer trips, removing range worry for most drivers.

Price, Trim And Colour Options

The SEALION 6 Premium Extended Range is priced nationally at $52,990 plus on-road costs. The model blends European-inspired styling with improved comfort and personalisation. Interior customers can choose between two interior colours, and exterior shades include Arctic White, Stone Grey, Harbour Grey, and Cosmos Black.

Suggested retail prices for the SEALION 6 range are as follows. The Essential starts at $42,990, Dynamic Standard Range at $45,990, Dynamic Extended Range at $46,990, Premium Standard Range at $52,990, and Premium Extended Range at $52,990. Optional paints are available for an additional $900 where applicable.

This is BYD continuing to refine the familiar recipe: bigger battery, longer electric range, electric-like fuel economy, and a price that keeps the whole thing sensible rather than extravagant. If you want a plug-in SUV that spends most of its life being electric without the angst of constant recharging, this is the sort of thing to consider.
