On 25 August 2025 Chery did something most car makers only do in nightmares: it sent two of its flagship Tiggo 9 Super Hybrids charging at each other to prove a point. The stage was South Africa. The choreography was simple and merciless. Two identical SUVs met in a 50 percent offset head-on collision, each doing 50 km/h. The idea was to recreate one of the cruellest, most realistic accidents drivers face, especially in right-hand drive markets like Australia.

The Test That Matters

This was not a mannequin-filled experiment you can tidy up with clever editing. Chery presented the result as a real-world proof. After the impact the passenger cabin remained intact. The A, B and C pillars showed no deformation. All airbags fired as intended, including the driver knee airbag and the far-side airbag. Seatbelt pre-tensioners worked. The fuel system behaved exactly as it should. Every door opened normally and hazard lights came on automatically to help with rescue and safety. In short, what happened in the crash scene was the automotive equivalent of a robust insurance policy.

Built On Strength: The Rock-Solid Body

The Tiggo 9’s survival skills are not luck. They come from the T2X platform and some serious engineering choices. The body is made from 85 percent high-strength steel, with 21 percent of that upgraded to ultra-high-strength hot-formed steel in critical zones. Up front there is a dual aluminium-alloy anti-collision beam system that covers 85 percent of the frontal area to soak up and distribute impact energy. Cushioning the human bits is a ten-airbag arrangement that includes a full-length curtain from A to D pillar plus a far-side airbag. Chery keeps a tidy safety slogan: Safety is the ultimate luxury.

Safety Without Borders

This crash in South Africa is one chapter in Chery’s Global Six-Dimensional Safety Challenge, a marathon of extreme trials designed to validate vehicles under wildly different conditions. The program ranges from battery immersion tests in Indonesia to high altitude trials in Mexico. The point is to prove consistency not just in a single lab but across climates, terrains and unexpected situations.

What It Means For Australian Drivers

For buyers in right-hand drive markets like Australia the message is straightforward. Chery is demonstrating global standards and seeking five-star safety credentials wherever its cars are sold. The dual-vehicle collision test is meant to reassure families and drivers that the Tiggo 9’s structure, restraints and passive safety systems can perform when the worst happens.

Availability
