Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships Set to Begin at Mt Buller
MBTH220827TH B52
Victoria’s top young skiers and snowboarders will launch from the race gates and hit the slopes at Mt Buller starting Monday, 19 August, as the mountain welcomes students from prep to Year 12 for a week of camaraderie and competition.
Mt Buller’s mountain operations team has been tirelessly preparing race courses and managing the snow cover to ensure the best conditions for the competitors. Groomers and snowmakers have been collaborating closely to stockpile and shape the cover, with a particular emphasis on the event zones, making the most of Mt Buller’s snowmaking technology, including 5 state-of-the-art snow factories to guarantee good cover. The resort utilizes SnowSat GPS equipment in the grooming fleet to precisely measure and map the snow cover, ensuring the most efficient use of the available snow across the runs and race courses.
The tradition of ‘interschools’ began in 1958 between two schools and now welcomes teams from 246 schools across the state, with 2,588 students on the race lists for events over 7 days. For some, Interschools is a crucial step towards Winter Olympic aspirations, while for others, it’s an integral part of school life and fostering a lifelong passion for snowsports with friends and family.
Event Manager David Spiers explains, “Interschools is truly a community event bringing students, schools, and families together on the mountain. It’s an inspiring week where we see athletes pushing personal limits and coming together as a team. It’s an opportunity for students to develop resilience and to support one another on and off the race courses. The energy and enthusiasm from parents, teachers, and the Mt Buller community during this week is great to be part of.”
The Mogul Ski World Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships is the largest event of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Noel Landry, General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts, said, “A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this incredible event to life. The combined efforts of our mountain crew, snowmakers, groomers, and the entire Mt Buller Interschools committee have ensured we can offer an unforgettable experience for all participants and their families.”
David Speirs, Interschools Event Manager, said, “We are excited to welcome all Interschools competitors, families, and schools to Mt Buller. It’s a true team effort, and the resort has been working for weeks preparing event sites across the ski area, and they are looking great. I look forward to seeing everyone for the Opening Ceremony in the Village Square at 6:15 pm on Monday, concluding with a spectacular fireworks show.”
