GWM Confirms V8 For Tank 700 To Woo ANZ Buyers Globally

GWM has quietly moved the needle on old-school automotive appetites by confirming the Tank 700 will wear a V8. The announcement, made at the Beijing Auto Show, is a clear play for markets that still adore displacement and drama, notably Australia and New Zealand.
The decision links the Tank family to a broader V8 push at the company. The same engineering stable is producing a high-end 4.0-litre twin-turbo hybrid V8 for the all-new GF supercar, and now a more conventional V8 is being prepared for the Tank 700. Think less racecar, more long-haul grunt.
GWM says the move is deliberately global. While large-capacity engines are becoming unusual in the domestic market, demand remains strong in regions that value towing, torque and a proper engine note. The Tank 700 V8 is being touted as a response to that appetite rather than a trend-chasing exercise.
The V8 confirmation builds on interest first seen at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, where journalists outside China flagged appetite for a V8 SUV from the Tank brand. That curiosity appears to have steered development priorities, with multiple V8 architectures now in the pipeline for different vehicle roles.

What This Means For The Tank 700
As the flagship of the Tank lineup, the 700 is pitched as off-road luxury with proper capability. The introduction of the Hi4-Z platform already broadened powertrain options in China, and a V8 would lift the model into a rarified bracket of premium heavyweights aimed at export markets.

No launch dates or market rollouts have been set. That part is deliberately vague, which means buyers should not hold their breath but they can start salivating. In short, the Tank 700 V8 is now on the map; the when and where remain a work in progress.

For those who still judge a vehicle by the size of its engine bay, this is welcome news. For everyone else, expect GWM to keep churning out options until someone complains or someone buys one.
