GWM has pushed its H6GT Hi4 PHEV into the market like a friend who knows too much about performance and still insists on saving you money at the pump. The coupe-inspired SUV keeps its familiar silhouette, but the cabin has been smartened up and the tech upgraded. Driveaway pricing starts at $52,990.

It is not a slow burner. Since the H6GT first arrived as GWM’s inaugural plug-in hybrid, more than 2,300 units have found buyers. Electrified variants now make up 51.5 percent of H6GT sales. On the national stage the PHEV has grabbed a 3.3 percent slice of the Australian PHEV market, and combined with the wider H6 range GWM has delivered over 2,700 plug-in hybrids in under 14 months. In March the brand was the second-largest seller of plug-in hybrids in Australia.

Hi4 Intelligent Hybrid AWD Technology

The headline is Hi4 – Hybrid Intelligent 4WD – which grafts dual-motor electric all-wheel drive onto a dedicated hybrid architecture. It constantly watches your inputs, the road and power demand and then apportion torque between front and rear like a stonkingly efficient traffic cop. The upshot is better traction, composed handling and a system that prefers electric drive where it makes sense.

And the numbers are the sort that make rivals check their watches. Combined output is 321 kW and 642 Nm, 0-100 km/h comes up in about 4.6 seconds, and the 35.43 kWh battery claims an electric-only range of up to 183 km NEDC. Official combined fuel consumption is an eye-catching 0.6 L/100 km NEDC, while overall range can reach about 1,183 km – so it will eat motorway miles and then apologise.

Significantly Upgraded Interior With Coffee OS

Inside, the H6GT has been tidied up to match the rest of the H6 family. The look is cleaner, materials are better, ergonomics improved and there are suede seats stamped with GT for anyone who wants to feel slightly superior at lights. A column-mounted gear selector frees up the centre console for storage and a proper wireless phone charger.

The cabin’s digital brain is Coffee OS running on a 14.6-inch 1080p screen. It promises faster processing, simpler menus and a more polished interface for infotainment, navigation and vehicle controls. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, so you can mirror your phone without fumbling with cables while pretending you are only mildly interested in technology.

Practicality is not an afterthought. The H6GT Hi4 PHEV offers the everyday usability of an SUV plus genuine electric capability for short urban runs, backed up by hybrid range for longer trips. The petrol H6GT remains available for those who prefer the traditional route. In short, there is now more choice across the H6 family, and this Hi4 PHEV sits at the sporty, efficient end of the spectrum.

It is clever, quick and oddly sensible all at once. If you want pace, efficiency and a cabin that does not look like it was designed by an angry spreadsheet, the H6GT Hi4 PHEV warrants a test drive.
