If you thought people movers were the automotive equivalent of a beige cardigan, meet the Denza D9, which arrives with more presence than your in laws at Christmas. It is big, it is plush, and crucially for Australia, it is electric and unapologetically luxurious.

Power And Range

The D9 rides on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and carries a 103.3 kWh Blade Battery, which is as much about common sense as it is about headline figures. The front-wheel drive version serves up 230 kW and 360 Nm, while the all-wheel drive model bumps that to 275 kW and 470 Nm. WLTP figures put range at roughly 520 kilometres for the FWD and 480 kilometres for the AWD. Charging is sensible too, with 11 kW AC, 200 kW DC fast charging, and even Vehicle-to-Load functionality for when you want to power the esky at a picnic.

Interior And Comfort

This is where the D9 stops being a van and starts pretending to be a lounge. A 3,110 mm wheelbase within a 5,250 mm length gives it proportions that feel generous rather than merely large. The three-row 2+2+3 layout puts second-row captain’s chairs centre stage, with ventilation, massage, power leg rests, four-way lumbar adjustment and position memory. There is more than 900 mm of legroom in the second and third rows and over 1,500 mm of headroom across every row. Materials include Nappa leather, open-pore white ash trim and, on the top grade, a premium suede roofliner for when you want your ceiling to feel like a small Scandinavian hotel.

Practical Luxury And Safety

Practicality has not been left to fend for itself. With seven aboard there is about 410 litres of luggage space, and folding the rear rows expands that to a cavernous 2,310 litres. Dual electric sliding doors, soft-close functionality and a large panoramic roof add to the everyday convenience. The suspension available on AWD models continually adjusts to reduce pitch and roll, aiming for limousine-like ride quality.

Safety is taken seriously. The Blade Battery is integrated into the structure for improved rigidity and a lower centre of gravity, 75 percent of the body is high-strength steel, and the D9 carries eight airbags including an unusually long side curtain. A comprehensive active safety suite covers automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alerts and more.

For those who like their luxury sensible rather than silly, pricing starts from $85,990 for the FWD version and $95,990 for the AWD model, excluding on-road costs. Put simply, the Denza D9 is a seven-seat electric mover that aims to make first class feel like the default option rather than an upgrade.
