Rally Tasmania has had a wardrobe change. For 2026 the event will run as the Subaru Wilderness Rally Tasmania, a name that promises more mud, more gravel and the comforting whiff of marketing synergy. The move marks Subaru’s return as naming partner and coincides with the arrival of the all-new Outback Wilderness in Australia.

Why It Matters

This is not just a logo swap. The rally is the fourth round of the 2026 EROAD Australian Rally Championship and it brings the nation’s best gravel grinders to Burnie in August. Organisers welcomed Subaru’s return, saying the brand’s long rallying pedigree and the state’s famously gnarly roads are a perfect match. Subaru last held naming rights for the Tasmanian round in 2018 and 2019, so this is a bit of a homecoming.

Meet The Outback Wilderness

The tie in is sensible. The Outback Wilderness is the rowdier cousin of the regular Outback, built for tougher terrain with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a 2.4 litre turbocharged Boxer engine and Dual-Mode X-Mode for confidence on gravel, mud or snow. It gets increased ground clearance, revised suspension tuning with e-Dampers and protective underbody bits, plus water repellent interiors and rugged styling that actually hints at adventure rather than just selling it in brochures.

The 2026 Subaru Wilderness Rally Tasmania runs from 14 to 16 August around the forests that flank Burnie, Tasmania. Expect high speeds, loose surfaces and the kind of sideways punctuation that makes rally fans grin. In short, it will be an excellent place to see what the Wilderness badge actually means when someone puts a foot down.
