MINI rolled into Auto China 2026 with a circus of colour, kits and curious one-offs, proving that personalisation is not an option but the whole point. The Beijing stand displayed 14 vehicles, including a world premiere Countryman collaboration and an electric John Cooper Works special that looks like it should be towing a surfboard rather than a trailer.

One Offs That Sound As Good As They Look

The headline act was a quirky partnership that took two Countrymans and turned them into rolling festival stages. Wider wheel arches give them a planted, aggressive stance, and the rear side windows have been swapped for a bespoke high-performance sound system. In short, these are cars that want to be heard as much as driven. It is customisation turned up to 11.

Electric Surfing And Lightweight Tomfoolery

Then there is the electric JCW collaboration with a surf-lifestyle label. It debuts in China with a semi-transparent fibreglass body and purpose-built accessories that actually make you imagine beach hair and a crate of cold drinks in the boot. It is improbably theatrical, and that is the point: MINI is selling a mood as much as machinery.

Special Editions And The Usual Suspects

Beyond the one-offs, the display was a lesson in how many faces a MINI can wear. Market-specific editions for China, long-running collabs reinterpreted in fresh colours and trims, and a Paul Smith edition on show for the first time in the country. Add in John Cooper Works models to remind everyone that customisation can be sporty as well as silly.

Booth As Stage

The whole exhibition played like a curated festival. The stand layout, the mix of production cars and bespoke projects, and the way each vehicle acted as a billboard for a lifestyle all sent the same message: MINI is a platform for creativity. Owners are invited to treat these cars as personal canvases, not just transport.
