Whether you are running a 5k or a 100k it pays to be prepared when it comes to a running event. After all, signing up for a fun run, no matter the distance is a great excuse to set a goal and commit to a training program.
We spoke to Ben Lucas, the Director of Flow Athletic who has a very popular run club called The Paddo Panthers RC. Ben has just completed his 47th marathon so if there is anyone who knows the best tech and products to help you maximise your performance, it’s him.

Here are some of his top picks.
Tech
I love using technology when it comes to my running prep and I have been trying different things for years. At the moment I love my Apple Watch Ultra which I use to make sure my heart rate is in the right zone. By knowing what my heart rate is doing, I can control my output, which is essential when running long distances as you don’t want to burn out before you reach the finish line.
I use the app Runna for my marathon program. This app allows me to personalise and track my training program. By having a plan in place, I can just start running whenever I want to rather than having to work out what I should be doing each day.
I like to use Strava to track my running progress. A lot of the Paddo Panthers are on Strava too so it is fun for the team to compare their runs outside of our run club. I also like Whoop for tracking my recovery.
Clothing
While I do like to change up what I am wearing, I have always been a big fan of ASICS shoes. At the moment I am wearing the ASICS Magic Speed Shoe. They are light, comfortable and supportive on your feet.
I am also big on avoiding chafing, so I will often run with nipple tape on, especially if I am running a longer distance. There is nothing worse than chafing in the middle of a marathon! Step One underwear is also good because they have anti-chafe panels between your inner thighs, and their fabric is breathable and moisture-wicking.
With clothes and shoes, ALWAYS make sure you wear them at least a few times before a fun run. While it can be fun to buy new gear for the event, shoes that haven’t been worn before can lead to blisters. New clothes may be uncomfortable. Try them out before event day and you may save yourself a lot of trouble.
Test Runs
The next event that The Paddo Panthers and I are preparing for is the Sydney Marathon in September, but first we will be running the Real Insurance Sydney Harbour 10&5K in July. While this event is a shorter track, it is fast, flat and in a similar area. This allows runners to have a practice, while also likely getting a better time on a flat course which is great for building confidence. It is also a lot of fun
Happy running!
