The jump from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 sounds like the kind of upgrade that should make your whole house levitate. In practice, it usually doesn’t. Most homes do not need a network transplant when what they really need is a router in a sensible place and fewer walls behaving like lead-lined bunkers.

That’s the annoying truth buried under the marketing glitter. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 can absolutely improve the right home, but they are not magic wands. Newer standards bring new tricks, yet the real-world payoff depends on your devices, your layout and whether your network is actually the problem in the first place.

What actually changed from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 6E is not a brand-new magic species of internet. It is Wi-Fi 6 with access to the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 7 also uses 6 GHz, but adds features such as wider channels and multi-link operation. Too many devices grinding the network? Wi-Fi 6 or later may help. Want a faster plan? Your internet service may be the real limiter. A newer Wi-Fi standard is not a substitute for common sense, which remains curiously unavailable in most retail packaging.
