There’s a strange little cult around battery percentages. One camp treats 100% like a moral failing, the other charges until the icon looks smug and round, then wanders off. The truth is far less dramatic and much more boring, which is usually how decent technology advice turns out.

If you want the short version: topping up to 100% does not instantly wreck a lithium-ion battery. But living at the top of the charge range for long stretches, especially in heat, can wear it faster than spending more time around the middle. In other words, the battery is not a delicate Victorian aunt, but it is also not immortal.

What actually wears a lithium-ion battery out

Modern phones, laptops and plenty of other rechargeable gadgets use lithium-ion batteries, and these batteries age whether you baby them or not. They wear from use, they wear with time, and they wear in ways that have nothing to do with your personal level of charge anxiety. The battery does not wake up one morning because you hit 100% and decide to retire in protest.

The important point is that battery health is shaped by several factors at once: charge cycles, temperature, time spent near full charge, and charging patterns. So when people argue about 80% versus 100% as if it were the only thing that matters, they are missing the larger, less glamorous reality. Batteries are complicated little beasts.

Is 100% bad? Not really, but living there is another story

Charging to 100% does not instantly damage a lithium-ion battery. That is the first useful correction to the internet folklore department. The second is less convenient: spending long periods at or near full charge can increase wear compared with sitting around a more moderate level. That is why some manufacturers offer charge limits or optimised charging features.

So the practical answer is not “never charge to 100%”. It is closer to “do not camp there unless you need the range”. If you are heading out for the day, using navigation, gaming, or expect a long stretch away from a charger, filling to 100% makes perfect sense. If the device is parked on a desk most of the day, a lower ceiling can reduce stress. The battery police will not kick down your door.

Why 80% is a useful trick, not a universal commandment

An 80% charge cap is a longevity tactic. It can reduce the time a battery spends in the high state-of-charge zone, which is the part manufacturers often try to avoid when they build charge-limiting or smart charging tools. That can help some devices last better over the long haul. It is also a trade-off, because you are voluntarily throwing away usable runtime every day. Very enlightened, if your life is powered by spreadsheets and self-denial.

That trade-off is the whole point. An 80% limit is not mandatory wizardry for every user, every device, every routine. It is most useful if you keep a device for years, charge it often, or rarely need the last bit of daily runtime. If you are constantly hunting for a charger by mid-afternoon, a hard cap is probably a productivity trap wearing a sensible hat.

Heat is the real villain here

If battery advice had a true chief menace, it would be heat. Temperature is a major factor in battery wear, and a hot battery can suffer regardless of whether it is sitting at 80% or 100%. That means charging on a pillow, baking a phone in direct sun, or letting a laptop roast itself on a blanket is much more obviously dumb than whether you topped up to full before leaving home.

This is why battery care advice is often boringly practical. Keep devices out of excessive heat, avoid charging them in situations where they run unusually hot, and do not treat the battery like a fuse that should be tested to destruction. The difference between a sensible charging habit and a foolish one is usually a lot more about temperature than percentage theatre.

Do not keep flattening the battery like it is 2009

Frequent deep discharges to very low levels are generally worse for battery health than routine partial charging. That is another piece of advice the old myths tend to muddle. Running a device flat over and over is not some noble ritual that cleanses the battery soul. It is just extra strain.

For everyday use, partial charging is usually friendlier than bouncing between extremes. Plugging in before the battery gets critically low is a decent habit, especially if the device tends to get hot or you rely on it for work. You do not need to hover over the percentage like a desperate day trader, but you also do not need to wait for the dramatic low-battery warning to begin your daily ritual.

Phones, laptops and earbuds do not all play by the same rules

Phones and laptops are the clearest case for charge limits or optimised charging features, because they often expose more battery controls and spend long stretches plugged in. Some devices support manual caps, while others use automatic systems that try to reduce the time spent at full charge. That is a sensible engineering answer, if not a particularly exciting one.

Earbuds are the awkward cousin in this story. The supplied evidence is stronger on phones and laptops than on earbuds specifically, and earbuds often have less user control over charging behaviour anyway. The general lithium-ion guidance still applies, but the practical advice may be more manufacturer-dependent. In other words, the battery chemistry is familiar, but the controls are not always generous.

What should you actually do tomorrow morning?

If you want the shortest useful answer, here it is: charge to 100% when you need the range, use an 80% limit or optimised charging when your device supports it and you do not need full capacity every day, and pay far more attention to heat and deep discharges than to battery superstition. That is the sensible middle path, which is regrettably less thrilling than a miracle hack but far more credible.

In practical terms, the best habits are modest ones. Avoid letting the device run flat all the time. Avoid extra heat. Use charge limits if they suit your routine. And do not panic about a full charge now and then, because batteries are meant to be used, not worshipped in a glass case like a very expensive relic.
