Alfa Romeo Commands The 1000 Miglia Start Line Today

Brescia woke up to the rumble of 44 editions of glory and nostalgia as the 1000 Miglia rolled away today. More than 400 vintage cars from 33 countries have signed up for this part-race, part-adventure spectacle – 144 time trials and eight timing checks to separate the sensible restorations from the stubbornly brilliant ones.

Alfa Romeo’s Big Day

If you like numbers, here is one to love: 50. Fifty Alfa Romeos lined up on the grid, the single largest brand presence in the field. At the centre of that parade is a 1956 1900 Super Sprint from the marque’s heritage collection – a touring-bodied coupé that looks like it was designed to be admired and then coerced into very fast corners.

The heritage entry is being supported by the factory Classiche squad and by a set of brand ambassadors from Turin. Expect a fair bit of style and a touch of rock and roll attitude around the paddock as the collaboration continues on a concert tour where Alfa Romeo is the official mobility partner.

A New Quadrifoglio Debuts

Not content with nostalgia alone, Alfa Romeo also brought a screaming bit of modern theatre – the Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa. It is a limited run of ten cars, all snapped up before the exhaust cooled, created under the BOTTEGAFUORISERIE umbrella and born from a partnership with a top-level sailing syndicate.

The Luna Rossa Quadrifoglio is not subtle. Carbon fibre aero appendages, side skirts and a massive rear wing boost downforce dramatically – the package claims up to 140 kg of downforce at 300 km/h. The paint shimmers like a racing boat at sea and the cabin borrows materials from sails. In short, it drives like a street car that has been thoroughly offended and then improved.

Back on the vintage front, the 1900 Super Sprint carries a 2.0-litre twin-cam four making 115 hp – modest on paper but beguiling in reality. Touring’s bodywork gives it the balance and elegance that made this model a favourite of gentleman drivers in the 1950s; just under 600 examples left the factory between 1955 and 1958.

The relationship between the 1000 Miglia and this marque is long and stubborn – a mutual fondness that stretches back to the earliest days of the event. The race has been a proving ground for style and speed and the brand has amassed an enviable record of successes along the way.

For fans, collectors and anyone who appreciates cars that smell of leather and history, this edition promises the full menu – parade, competition and the occasional theatrical roar. The route visits some of Italy’s most picturesque spots and returns to Brescia on June 13, leaving behind tales for next year’s gearbox oil.
