Hyundai Motor Group has just taken another sizeable step into Europe with a new €150 million facility at its technical centre in Rüsselsheim. Called Square Campus, it is the biggest investment at the site since the Round Campus opened in 2003 and is designed to speed up development of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis models tailored for European drivers. Think of it as a laboratory for cars, only louder and much better insulated.

Advanced Facility Unlocks New Capabilities

The 25,000 m2 campus houses the Group’s largest semi-anechoic chamber, which means engineers can interrogate noise, vibration and harshness without worrying about weather or passing trucks. There are state-of-the-art dynamometers to test whole vehicles and individual components for electric, hybrid and internal combustion powertrains. Add to that an EV charging laboratory, a modern driving simulator and expanded electronics labs focused on over-the-air updates, cybersecurity and advanced driver assistance systems. In short, it lets the team test and validate cars and systems as if they were already on the road.

Real-World Testing And Global Collaboration

Square Campus does not replace outdoor prototype runs but reduces the dependency on them by providing a controlled environment for repeatable, high-precision testing. It will work closely with the Group’s main R&D facility in Namyang, Korea, forming part of a global testing and knowledge-sharing network that speeds up development cycles and helps deliver features specifically tuned to European tastes.

Sustainable Design And Growing Team

Sustainability was not an afterthought. The campus uses recycled materials, photovoltaic panels and heat pump systems as part of a broader push toward greener mobility and the Group’s aim of zero tailpipe emissions by 2045. The investment also underpins people growth: the HMETC team has expanded by around 20 percent since 2024 and now exceeds 500 staff, bringing together engineers across disciplines to accelerate integrated innovation.

Continued European Investment

Square Campus complements existing European facilities, including the Nürburgring site which was expanded in January 2025 with a further €13 million and 834 m2 of specialised testing space. Together these investments underline a clear commitment to engineering for the European market and to producing vehicles that meet local expectations for performance, comfort and technology.
