A Steam Deck is worth considering when the PC games you want to play suit its handheld format and compatibility. It is not automatically the best choice for every player. This replaces our 2024 holiday recommendation with a checklist based on your actual library, without claiming that we tested every game or competing handheld.
Start with five games you really play
Look up each game’s Steam Deck compatibility details, not just whether it is sold on Steam. Valve distinguishes Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Playable can involve extra steps, while Unknown means Valve has not completed the compatibility assessment. Read the details attached to the badge.
Consider the experience as well as whether it launches. Small text, controller layout, launchers and an internet requirement can matter on a handheld. Compatibility ratings are not a promise of a particular frame rate, battery duration or permanent compatibility after every game update.
Make a realistic travel check
Decide where you will use it: at home, on public transport or away from reliable internet. Download and launch the intended games before leaving, and check their offline requirements. A large Steam account is not the same thing as an entire playable library installed and available anywhere.
Think about size, controls and charging alongside the screen. If possible, handle the device before buying. Comfort is personal; our original claim that it is necessarily more comfortable than a Switch was not supported by a comparative test.
Compare the Australian total
Use current Australian checkout prices for the exact model and seller. Include delivery, storage needs and any dock or accessories you actually require. The earlier article’s US-style dollar figures and unverified used-market bargains should not be used as Australian price guidance.
Compare the same intended games and tasks across alternatives. A lower purchase price does not help if your essential game is unsupported. Conversely, do not pay for a more powerful device solely for specifications you will not use. Emulation also involves rights and legal questions beyond simply owning a game; this guide does not promise that copying or bypassing protection is lawful.
Choose from the games outward. That produces a more useful decision than declaring one handheld the universal holiday winner.
