The Nürburgring Nordschleife, famously dubbed “The Green Hell,” has long stood as the ultimate proving ground for high-performance vehicles. In an extraordinary feat, the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD has carved its name into history, becoming the first car from an American automaker to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time on the iconic track. With an officially certified lap time of 6:57.685, the Mustang GTD is rewriting the rulebook for American performance engineering.

A Record-Breaking Run

Behind the wheel for this momentous achievement was seasoned Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Müller. His expert handling of the Mustang GTD’s 815-horsepower powerhouse secured the fifth fastest time ever recorded by a stock production sports car at the Nürburgring, as per official records. The Mustang GTD is now part of an elite group of only six production sports cars to have completed the circuit in under seven minutes.

This accomplishment fulfills a bold promise made by Ford CEO Jim Farley during the Mustang GTD’s debut in August 2023.

“The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars,” Farley said. “We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD. We’ll be back.”

The Mustang GTD’s record-breaking performance is the culmination of two years of relentless development by a small, highly skilled team of Ford and Multimatic engineers. This supercar borrows heavily from the Mustang GT3 race car but goes beyond its racing counterpart with innovative features that are unrestricted by GT3 regulations.

Key technologies that enabled the sub-seven-minute lap include:

  • Carbon-Ceramic Brakes: Delivering unparalleled stopping power and durability.
  • Active Aerodynamics: Optimizing downforce and reducing drag for superior handling.
  • Semi-Active Suspension: Providing dynamic responsiveness to varying track conditions.
  • Carbon-Fiber Body: Ensuring a lightweight yet robust structure.

The Mustang GTD that achieved this milestone was a completely stock model. However, for safety compliance on the Nürburgring, it was equipped with motorsport-grade features such as a roll cage, competition seat, and five-point harness.

Ford’s journey to the Nürburgring is chronicled in a captivating 13-minute documentary titled The Road to the Ring. Available on Ford’s official website, YouTube channel, and social media platforms, the film offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the trials and triumphs of the Mustang GTD development process.

From rigorous testing at American tracks like Sebring to grueling development sessions at the Nürburgring, the documentary captures the essence of what it takes to engineer a supercar capable of defying expectations. Featuring insights from key figures such as Jim Farley, Dirk Müller, Multimatic’s Chief Technical Officer Larry Holt, and Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall, the film provides an intimate look at the passion and innovation driving this project.

A New Era for American Supercars

The Mustang GTD represents a watershed moment in American automotive history, proving that a muscle car can transcend its roots and compete on the global stage as a bona fide supercar. Benefiting from lessons learned in the Mustang GT3 racing program, the GTD showcases the best of Ford Performance Motorsports and Multimatic Motorsports ingenuity.

With its stunning Nürburgring performance, the Mustang GTD signals a new era for American-made high-performance vehicles. As Ford continues to push the boundaries of engineering excellence, one thing is certain: the Mustang GTD’s legacy is just beginning.
