For most TVs and computer monitors sold as LED, the screen is an LCD illuminated by LED backlighting. OLED uses light-emitting pixels without that separate backlight. This difference explains their light control, but it does not establish which individual screen has the best colour, brightness or value.
How light reaches the image
An LED-backlit LCD controls light passing through its liquid-crystal layer. Local-dimming designs vary the backlight in regions. OLED can control light at the pixel level, including switching pixels off for black.
LG’s explanation of Mini LED identifies it as an evolution of LCD backlighting. Smaller backlight LEDs and dimming zones are not the same as making every image pixel self-emissive. MicroLED is a separate display approach and should not be used as another name for Mini LED.
Compare the result in your room
For dark scenes, inspect shadow detail and bright objects against dark backgrounds. For daytime viewing, look at reflections and visibility from the seats you actually use. A technology label alone cannot tell you how a particular model handles either situation.
Compare screens with sensible picture settings and the same content. Shop display modes can make a vivid image look impressive while telling you little about accurate colour at home. For colour-critical work, seek measurements for the exact model and settings.
Gaming involves more than panel type
Check refresh rate, response behaviour, input connections and the resolution/refresh combinations supported by your computer or console. OLED and LCD products both vary. Intel’s laptop guide also distinguishes display capability from the processing performance needed to supply it.
Use the workload you intend to run. A high refresh-rate specification does not promise that a game will render at the matching frame rate.
Consider long static-image use
Read the manufacturer’s care instructions, image-retention precautions and warranty conditions before choosing a screen for a fixed desktop, dashboard or signage. Keep those requirements separate from broad claims that one technology always lasts longer.
Compare published energy information for the actual size and model too. Content, brightness and settings affect consumption, so an OLED-versus-LED label is not a complete electricity-cost calculation.
