Every aisle you walk down now in your local bottle shop, there’s bound to be some ‘hard soda’ close by. In fact, hard soda has exploded into the alcoholic market! In the US, sales of hard sodas hit $US1.3 billion in 2019, up 202 percent on the previous year and Australia has followed suit and fallen ‘hard’ for these alcoholic drinks as well with double-digit growth year on year.

But what actually, is ‘Hard Soda’? Hard Soda is essentially carbonated water with some type of flavoring included that is reminiscent of traditional soft drinks e.g. Cola, Lemon Squash etc. The ‘hard’ aspect of it is a way of letting people know that it has alcohol in it.

These are becoming more and more popular as consumers look for alternatives to beer and wine. There is, however, one key element to consider when looking for a hard soda to enjoy on your night out. Sugar. To get the desired taste, a lot of these Hard Sodas are having to include a lot of sugar. Just like what is generally required for ‘soft drinks’. With anywhere between 20 – 30 grams of sugar per serving.

Innovative beverage businesses are, however, coming forward to tackle this problem. One such company is GRAVITY Drinks Co. An Australian beverage business founded by Mick Spencer and Liam Battye in 2022. They have recently released two different flavored Hard Sodas with less than 0.5g of sugar per serving.

Their Citrus Explosion HardER Soda and Ginger & Lime HardER Soda are each 8% in alcohol, so make sure you pace yourself.

“HardER Soda is a drink for the people,” says co-founder Mick Spencer. “It was important for us to deliver a drink that packs a punch, is full flavour, low sugar and without the price tag. It’s been our mission from day one to bring people together, create “better for you product” and HardER Soda is here to shake up the market” says Mick.

Shaking things up they are indeed. GRAVITY has gone from strength to strength since launching, and with the demand for hard sodas continuing to grow, along with consumers not wanting to consume as much sugar, it’s not hard to see why.

With so many hard sodas to choose from now, be sure to look for those that are considering elements like sugar amount and calories.
