Retro games can offer familiar favourites, a different style of game design or a way to explore titles you missed. That does not establish that vintage consoles are increasing in value or that every old game is easy to access. The useful choice is between original hardware, an authorised modern release and a licensed collection.
Choose the game before the hardware
Make a short list of the actual titles you want to play. Check which versions are legally available, what equipment they need and whether the version includes the features you remember. A modern port may change controls, saving, multiplayer or presentation; an original cartridge may need a particular console region.

Check the title list and access conditions rather than assuming every Nintendo game is included. For other games, check the rights holder’s current store pages for authorised ports, collections or reissues. Distinguish buying a copy from access tied to an ongoing subscription. Check whether local multiplayer, accessories or an internet connection are required for the way you intend to play.
Preservation and nostalgia are different goals
A collector may value original packaging and hardware, while a player may prefer a convenient release with modern saving options. Neither goal makes an unlicensed download legitimate. Ownership of an old cartridge should not be treated as blanket permission to download any online copy.
Set a budget that includes controllers, cables, repairs and display equipment. For a shared evening, check the controls and save progress before inviting people over. The appeal is the experience you want from a particular game, rather than a promise that old technology is automatically better.
