The PS5 Pro is a released PlayStation console, so the launch rumours in the original March 2024 version of this article are no longer a useful buying guide. The practical question is whether its supported visual improvements are worth paying for with the games, screen and accessories you already own.
What Sony confirms
Sony’s Australian PS5 Pro page lists a 2 TB SSD, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR. PSSR is Sony’s image-upscaling technology. These features describe capabilities; they do not mean every game gains the same resolution, frame rate or visual effects.
Look for information about the specific game’s PS5 Pro support and available graphics modes. An enhanced version or patch may be needed. Avoid treating a maximum display-output specification as a promise that a demanding game will run at that resolution and frame rate simultaneously.
Your television is part of the decision
Check the television or monitor’s supported resolution, refresh rate and HDMI input settings. Then compare them with the game mode you intend to use. A display’s advertised refresh rate alone does not establish what the console can send through every input.
If your current PS5 already meets your needs, identify a visible improvement in the games you actually play before upgrading. This guide does not include side-by-side testing or independently measured frame rates, and it does not claim that an upgrade is essential.
Budget for discs and the stand separately
PS5 Pro is sold without a built-in disc drive. If you want to use compatible physical games or discs, check Sony’s separate compatible disc-drive requirements and availability. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during setup. The vertical stand is also sold separately.
Those extras can change the total cost substantially. Compare the complete Australian package at the time of purchase, including any accessories you need, rather than relying on an old overseas launch price or a promotional bundle that may have ended.
Storage and setup
The listed 2 TB capacity is not a promise that the full nominal capacity is available for installed games. Consider the space your current library occupies and how you will move it. Back up or synchronise saves using the supported options for your account before changing consoles.
Check account access, game compatibility and accessory requirements in Sony’s current documentation. A premium controller is a separate purchase decision; it should not be assumed to be included with the console.
Who should consider it?
PS5 Pro makes the clearest case when a supported game offers a visual mode you value, your display can show the difference and the full package fits your budget. Someone choosing a first console should compare that package with other current PS5 options. Existing owners should judge the improvement game by game rather than buying on the strength of the old rumour cycle.
