Alienware 34 240Hz Gaming Monitor AW3426DWM Review

Alienware gaming monitors have traditionally occupied the part of the market where performance comes first and the price tends to follow. That makes the Alienware AW3426DWM a slightly different proposition. At $699 AUD, it brings a 34-inch ultrawide panel, 3440 x 1440 resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate and adaptive sync into a price bracket that is far easier to justify than the brand’s OLED alternatives.

I have been using the AW3426DWM across both gaming and everyday desktop work, and I think its positioning makes a lot of sense. It doesn’t have the instant visual impact of QD-OLED, nor is it trying to compete with increasingly ridiculous 360Hz and 500Hz esports displays. Instead, Alienware has taken a more conventional VA panel and pushed it into a specification that suits the way a lot of PC gamers actually play.

There are compromises. HDR is limited by the panel hardware, the USB connectivity could be much better, and there are situations where you can still see some of the weaknesses associated with VA technology. But when I consider the overall combination of screen size, resolution, refresh rate, contrast, build quality and price, those weaknesses become much easier to accept.

More importantly, this is a monitor that has been enjoyable to live with. That matters more to me than having the most technically advanced panel on the spec sheet.

Verdict

The Alienware AW3426DWM gets a lot right for $699 AUD. Its 34-inch 3440 x 1440 panel gives games plenty of scale, the 240Hz refresh rate feels excellent in faster titles and the VA panel’s 3,000:1 contrast gives dark scenes far more depth than a typical IPS monitor. It is also a genuinely useful everyday display, with enough room for multiple windows and none of the extra panel-care considerations that can come with OLED. HDR is modest, the USB hub feels underdone and I would have liked stronger USB-C connectivity, but those compromises are easier to accept at this price. If you want a fast 34-inch ultrawide without spending four figures on OLED, the AW3426DWM is one of the easiest monitors to recommend.

Design, Build Quality and Setup

Alienware’s visual identity used to be about making sure everyone within a ten-metre radius knew you had bought an Alienware product. Aggressive shapes, large logos and lighting were all part of the experience. The AW3426DWM is much more restrained, and I think that is the right direction.

The monitor is primarily black, with relatively clean lines and a design that still looks like gaming hardware without becoming the centrepiece of the entire room. There is still enough Alienware character to distinguish it from a generic office monitor, but it no longer looks as though someone attached a display panel to the side of a spaceship.

Around the front, the bezels are reasonably thin. Alienware lists the top bezel at 8.78mm and the left and right sides at 8.79mm, while the lower bezel is thicker at 18.35mm. In normal use, I barely thought about them. With an ultrawide display, most of your attention is already being pulled into the enormous amount of screen directly in front of you.

The stand is similarly sensible. You get 110mm of height adjustment, tilt from -5 degrees to 21 degrees, and a small amount of pivot adjustment. It feels sturdy enough that normal keyboard and mouse use isn’t constantly sending the display into a wobble, which sounds obvious until you have used a cheaper ultrawide with a stand that moves every time the desk does.

I would have liked proper swivel adjustment. If you regularly turn your monitor towards somebody else, you will have to rotate the stand itself rather than simply turning the panel. It is not a huge issue, but it is one of those small quality-of-life features that would have made an already good stand more complete.

There is also 100 x 100mm VESA mounting support, and I suspect that is how a lot of buyers will eventually use a 34-inch monitor like this. Ultrawides benefit considerably from a monitor arm because it gives you more control over placement while reclaiming some desk space underneath.

At roughly 805mm wide, this is obviously not a small display. The stand itself is around 270mm wide and 232mm deep, so I would measure your desk before ordering one if you are coming from a conventional 24 or 27-inch screen. It isn’t ridiculously deep, but the width can catch you out.

Setup itself was easy. The stand attaches without turning assembly into a weekend project, and despite the size of the packaging, the actual monitor is manageable once it is out of the box. Alienware lists the panel and stand combination at around 6.8kg, while the packaged unit comes in at just over 14kg.

One thing I genuinely appreciate is the cable selection. Alienware includes a 1.8m DisplayPort cable, 1.8m HDMI FRL cable and 1.8m USB Type-A to Type-B cable, alongside the power cable. That means you can actually use the monitor properly without immediately searching through a drawer full of mystery cables.

It sounds like an unimportant detail, but manufacturers have become surprisingly stingy with included accessories. At $699, getting the relevant cables in the box shouldn’t feel noteworthy, yet somehow it does.

On paper, there isn’t a single specification here that completely changes the gaming monitor market. What makes the AW3426DWM interesting is how the specifications fit together.

A 34-inch 3440 x 1440 ultrawide isn’t unusual. A 240Hz gaming monitor isn’t unusual either. Putting those two things together at this price, while also maintaining decent contrast, adaptive sync and a well-built adjustable stand, is where it starts becoming much more appealing.

The 34-Inch Ultrawide Experience

If you have never used a 34-inch 21:9 monitor before, the move from a regular 16:9 display is arguably more significant than many specification upgrades.

3440 x 1440 gives you considerably more horizontal workspace than standard 2560 x 1440 without pushing you all the way into the enormous dimensions of a 49-inch super-ultrawide. For me, 34 inches remains one of the easiest ultrawide sizes to live with because it feels genuinely expansive without requiring you to rearrange the entire desk.

The 1500R curve plays an important role here. On a screen this wide, the curve brings the outer sections of the display towards your natural field of view. Once I had used it for a while, I stopped consciously noticing the curvature at all.

That is probably the best compliment I can give it. A curved monitor shouldn’t constantly remind you that it is curved. It should simply make the width of the display feel more natural.

Gaming is where the format becomes particularly convincing. Titles that properly support 21:9 can feel much more immersive because you gain peripheral information without increasing the vertical height to something ridiculous. Racing games, open-world titles and first-person games can all benefit enormously from the wider viewpoint.

It isn’t universally perfect. Some games still have awkward ultrawide support, particularly menus, cutscenes or older releases. You can end up with black bars on either side during certain content. That’s more of an ultrawide compatibility issue than something Alienware can solve, but it is worth understanding before making the jump from 16:9.

For desktop use, I actually think ultrawide is just as convincing.

I found myself keeping multiple windows open without constantly stacking and minimising them. A browser can sit alongside a document, editing software or another application without everything feeling cramped. If you work in a CMS, edit photos, work with timelines or simply have too many browser tabs open, the extra horizontal space becomes useful very quickly.

At 110 pixels per inch, text also looks appropriately sharp at normal viewing distances. You aren’t getting the density of a 4K 27-inch monitor, but I never felt as though the resolution was too low for the physical size of the screen.

There is an argument for 4K ultrawides, but running a significantly higher resolution also adds a substantial GPU requirement. One of the reasons 3440 x 1440 continues to work so well for gaming is that it strikes a sensible balance between image detail and performance.

You still get a much sharper image than 1080p, but your GPU hasn’t been handed an absurd number of pixels to render every frame.

240Hz Gaming Performance and Response Times

The 240Hz refresh rate is probably the main reason to consider the AW3426DWM over the large number of cheaper 34-inch ultrawides sitting around 144Hz, 165Hz or 180Hz.

There is an obvious question, though: do you actually need 240Hz?

I don’t think everyone does, but I also don’t think 240Hz should be dismissed simply because even faster monitors now exist.

The jump from 60Hz to high refresh rate remains enormous. Moving from 144Hz or 165Hz to 240Hz is more subtle, but it is still noticeable, particularly in fast-moving games and general desktop responsiveness. Cursor movement feels cleaner, camera movement becomes easier to follow and competitive games can feel more immediate when the system is generating enough frames.

After spending time at 240Hz, going back to 60Hz is unpleasant. The entire interface suddenly feels heavier and more fragmented. Even outside games, scrolling through web pages and moving windows around the desktop reminds you that refresh rate affects far more than competitive shooters.

The bigger issue is actually feeding the display.

3440 x 1440 contains substantially more pixels than standard 2560 x 1440. If you want to approach 240 frames per second at the monitor’s native resolution, you need a capable GPU, and your expectations need to reflect the types of games you play.

Esports titles are the obvious use case. Competitive shooters and lighter games can reach extremely high frame rates, particularly with appropriate settings. In those titles, 240Hz makes genuine sense.

Modern visually demanding games are different. If you are turning on high-quality lighting, detailed environments, ray tracing or other expensive settings, you may never get anywhere near 240fps.

I don’t consider that a weakness of the monitor. A 240Hz ceiling gives you room to take advantage of easier-to-run games while still enjoying demanding titles at lower frame rates. I would rather have that flexibility than buy a 165Hz panel and find myself capped when a game can actually run faster.

It also makes more sense to me than chasing 360Hz or 500Hz on an ultrawide intended to do a bit of everything. Those refresh rates can be valuable in highly competitive environments, but they become increasingly difficult to justify for somebody who also wants high graphical settings and visually demanding games.

Alienware provides three response-time modes: Fast at 4ms, Super Fast at 2ms and Extreme at 1ms GTG.

I found Super Fast to be the sensible option for regular use. It improves pixel response without pushing the panel as aggressively as the Extreme setting. Extreme exists for anyone determined to chase the lowest advertised response time, but the difference between 1ms and 2ms isn’t something I would sacrifice overall image behaviour to achieve.

That matters with VA technology because overdrive settings can create their own artefacts when pushed too hard. A specification saying “1ms” doesn’t automatically mean that mode is the best one to use.

Adaptive sync also helps the monitor cope with the reality that frame rates aren’t fixed. AMD FreeSync Premium and VESA AdaptiveSync allow the display to match its refresh behaviour to the frames being delivered by the PC, reducing the tearing that occurs when the two fall out of step.

For a 240Hz ultrawide, that is especially valuable because your frame rate could vary dramatically depending on the game. You might be pushing huge numbers in an esports title and then sitting far lower in a graphically intensive single-player game.

The ability to work comfortably across that range makes the AW3426DWM feel less like a monitor designed around one benchmark number and more like something I can actually use across my whole game library.

VA Panel Quality, Contrast and Colour

Choosing VA instead of IPS or OLED defines a lot of the AW3426DWM’s personality.

The headline advantage is contrast. Alienware rates the panel at 3,000:1 native contrast, which is considerably stronger than what you typically see from a conventional IPS gaming monitor.

That difference becomes particularly noticeable in dark content.

Blacks look deeper, shadows have more weight and games with nighttime environments don’t suffer from the same obvious grey glow that can appear on lower-contrast LCD panels. Horror games, dark shooters and films with a lot of low-light scenes generally suit VA technology well for exactly this reason.

It isn’t OLED black. Individual pixels are not switching themselves completely off, and expecting an LCD monitor to reproduce that effect would be unrealistic. But for a conventional backlit panel, the contrast is one of the stronger parts of the display.

Colour coverage is listed at 95% DCI-P3, with support for 1.07 billion colours through an 8-bit + FRC implementation.

In practice, I found the image colourful enough for gaming and general media without everything looking artificially radioactive. Games can look vibrant and punchy, while the stronger contrast helps prevent the image from feeling washed out.

It is important to understand that Alienware does not advertise factory calibration accuracy here. I therefore wouldn’t position the AW3426DWM as a monitor for professional colour grading or other work where exact colour accuracy is the primary requirement.

That doesn’t make it unsuitable for general creative work. It just means gaming is clearly the priority.

The traditional VA weakness is motion performance, especially in darker transitions. Some VA panels can produce obvious dark smearing because darker pixels take longer to transition between shades.

I could still find traces of that behaviour on the AW3426DWM in the right content. If you deliberately go searching for VA artefacts, they haven’t magically disappeared. However, the higher refresh rate and sensible overdrive behaviour mean it is much less distracting than the reputation of older VA gaming displays might suggest.

For me, the trade-off is reasonable. I would rather accept some VA-specific motion limitations in exchange for noticeably better native contrast than move to a lower-contrast IPS display at the same price, particularly because I play plenty of games where dark scenes are common.

The anti-glare finish is another part of the panel I appreciated. It reduces distracting reflections without making the display appear excessively hazy. Matte coatings vary considerably between monitors, and aggressive coatings can sometimes make lighter areas look slightly dirty or grainy.

I didn’t find that to be a major problem here.

Viewing angles are officially rated at 178 degrees horizontally and vertically, although the curved design naturally encourages you to sit somewhere near the centre anyway. Like most VA displays, I would not choose it specifically for situations where multiple people need perfect colour consistency from extreme angles.

For the person sitting directly in front of it, which is how a gaming monitor is normally used, it works well.

HDR and Dolby Vision

HDR is one area where expectations need to be controlled.

The AW3426DWM carries VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, has a typical brightness rating of 400 cd/m², and can reach a listed 450 cd/m² peak. It also supports Dolby Vision HDR.

Seeing Dolby Vision on the specification list at this price is unusual and gives the monitor a little more versatility with compatible content. However, Dolby Vision support alone does not turn a conventional VA panel into an OLED or Mini LED HDR display.

The hardware still sets the limits.

DisplayHDR 400 sits towards the entry point of desktop HDR. You can get brighter highlights and a little extra visual punch in compatible content, but you aren’t getting the extreme highlight intensity or precise local dimming that makes high-end HDR displays so dramatic.

That distinction matters because HDR labels have become confusing. Two monitors can both say HDR on the box while producing completely different results.

On the Alienware, I would treat HDR as a useful additional capability rather than the main reason to buy it.

For normal SDR gaming, I actually think the strong native contrast of the VA panel is more important to the everyday experience. The display already gives dark scenes decent depth without relying entirely on HDR processing.

If HDR is at the very top of your priority list, I would be looking towards OLED or a capable Mini LED monitor instead. You will pay substantially more, but the hardware is better suited to creating the huge difference between bright highlights and genuinely dark areas that HDR is supposed to deliver.

The AW3426DWM isn’t pretending to be that product. At $699, I can live with that.

Everyday Use, Productivity and Eye Comfort

One of the reasons I wouldn’t judge this monitor purely as gaming hardware is how much time it is likely to spend doing everything else.

Most people buying a $699 monitor aren’t going to have it switched off whenever they’re not playing a game. It could easily become the main screen for work, web browsing, video, editing and whatever else happens on the same PC.

This is where the 34-inch ultrawide format starts earning its desk space.

I have been able to keep multiple useful windows visible simultaneously rather than constantly switching between them. For writing and web work, I can have a CMS or document on one side and research or another application on the other. For more complicated workflows, three narrower windows can fit across the display without everything becoming unusably small.

The monitor also supports Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture, which opens up some more specialised options. If you have two computers or another source connected, being able to display both can be genuinely useful.

It isn’t something every buyer will touch, but I would rather have it than not.

The display is also flicker-free, includes a low blue light feature, and has the anti-glare surface I mentioned earlier. After using it through longer periods of work followed by gaming, I found it comfortable enough that the size never became exhausting.

The curve helps here as well. On a flat 34-inch ultrawide, the edges can feel noticeably farther away from your eyes than the centre. A 1500R curve reduces that difference and means I don’t feel as though I am constantly moving my head to inspect the edges of the display.

I wouldn’t claim a curved monitor is some magical solution to eye strain, but on an ultrawide this size, I prefer it.

There are no built-in speakers, webcam or microphone. I don’t consider the lack of a webcam or microphone a meaningful loss on a gaming display, and I normally prefer separate audio anyway. Still, anyone hoping to simplify their desk setup should know that the monitor isn’t going to replace those accessories.

Alienware Command Center compatibility gives you software control over supported monitor settings from Windows. I generally prefer configuring a monitor once and leaving it alone, but being able to change settings without repeatedly opening the physical OSD can be convenient.

For physical control, the joystick-style interface is still much better than trying to remember what four identical buttons underneath a monitor are supposed to do. Monitor manufacturers discovered joysticks years ago, and I remain convinced there is almost no reason to go backwards.

Ports, Connectivity and Stand Adjustability

Connectivity on the AW3426DWM is adequate rather than exceptional.

You get two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 connection, a USB 5Gbps Type-B upstream port, one USB 5Gbps Type-A downstream port and one USB-C 5Gbps downstream port.

The USB-C connection can provide up to 15W of charging.

That is fine for topping up a phone or powering smaller accessories, but this is not the kind of USB-C implementation that transforms the monitor into a one-cable laptop docking station. If you wanted high-wattage laptop charging, extensive USB connectivity and display input over a single Type-C cable, this isn’t really designed around that workflow.

I would have preferred a more generous USB hub. One Type-A downstream connection is restrictive when a monitor is large enough to become the centre of an entire PC setup. A keyboard receiver, headset dongle, controller cable and other accessories can consume ports extremely quickly.

There are workarounds, obviously, but an extra couple of USB-A ports would have cost Alienware very little while making the monitor more useful.

There is also an important detail around HDMI.

According to Alienware’s supplied specifications, the HDMI connections support features including FRL, DSC, HDR and VRR, but the listed maximum through HDMI is 2560 x 1440 at 240Hz. For the monitor’s full 3440 x 1440 at 240Hz specification, DisplayPort 1.4 is the connection I would be using with a gaming PC.

Alienware includes the appropriate DisplayPort cable, so this isn’t a major inconvenience for a desktop gaming setup. It is simply something worth knowing if you expected to run the full native ultrawide resolution and refresh rate through HDMI.

Console users should also remember that consoles are primarily designed around 16:9 output. You can connect one, but you aren’t buying a 21:9 3440 x 1440 monitor to get the most natural console experience.

The stand offers enough adjustment for most desks. Height adjustment is particularly welcome because ultrawides can become uncomfortable if the centre of the display sits too high or low. I had no issue finding a sensible position.

As mentioned earlier, the absence of full swivel is the main stand-related feature I miss.

The Compromises and Annoyances

No $699 ultrawide is going to give you everything, and the AW3426DWM makes several deliberate compromises to hit its price.

The most obvious is the VA panel.

For the money, I think the increased contrast is a good trade, but buyers sensitive to dark-level smearing may still prefer a fast IPS display. The 240Hz refresh rate doesn’t completely erase the characteristics of VA technology.

Then there is HDR.

Seeing DisplayHDR 400 and Dolby Vision on the specification sheet sounds much more exciting than the actual hardware allows it to be. HDR works, but I wouldn’t buy this monitor because of HDR. Without the local dimming capability of a good Mini LED system or the per-pixel control of OLED, the experience is inherently limited.

The USB hub also feels unnecessarily basic. A single USB-A downstream port and 15W USB-C charging are enough to put USB connectivity on the specification sheet, but they don’t make the monitor a serious connectivity hub.

That is probably my biggest practical criticism because Alienware has otherwise made this a monitor that works very well as the centre of a desktop setup.

I would have preferred more USB-A ports and considerably stronger USB-C power delivery.

The HDMI limitation is another small frustration. Having HDMI 2.1-related features available but not being able to run the native 3440 x 1440 resolution at the full 240Hz through HDMI makes the connection feel less capable than buyers might initially assume.

Again, DisplayPort solves that on PC.

There is also no built-in audio, although I personally don’t count that as a serious weakness. Monitor speakers are rarely something I want to use voluntarily.

Perhaps the biggest question mark isn’t about what Alienware has left out, but whether buyers should simply spend more and move to OLED.

That decision is going to depend heavily on how you use the monitor.

If I were building a gaming-only setup and budget were much less important, OLED’s black levels, pixel response and HDR ability would absolutely appeal to me. The image quality ceiling is higher.

However, OLED introduces its own considerations, including price and the long-term realities of displaying static desktop content. If you spend full workdays with taskbars, browsers and application interfaces sitting in the same places before switching to games at night, a conventional VA monitor remains a very easy thing to live with.

There is something appealing about simply using the screen without thinking about panel care.

How It Compares With Other 34-Inch Ultrawides

The AW3426DWM becomes easier to understand when you look at where it sits between entry-level VA ultrawides and OLED models.

According to the pricing included in my research material, the AOC CU34G4Z is one of the closest alternatives, offering a 34-inch 240Hz Fast VA setup for around $599 AUD. That makes the AOC approximately $100 cheaper, which isn’t insignificant at this part of the market.

If your priority is obtaining 3440 x 1440 and 240Hz for as little money as possible, that kind of competitor deserves attention.

The argument for spending more on the Alienware comes from the complete package. Build quality, the stand, Dolby Vision support, the USB hub and Dell’s warranty coverage all add value even though none of them independently transforms the gaming experience.

There are also 34-inch ultrawides from brands including MSI and ASUS sitting in the broader mid-range, often with refresh rates around 180Hz to 200Hz. Those can make sense for buyers who don’t care about reaching 240Hz and would rather keep more money in their pocket.

That is the part of the market where the Alienware has to work hardest.

Going from 180Hz to 240Hz isn’t comparable to going from 60Hz to 240Hz. The difference is there, but it is smaller. If you are predominantly playing slower single-player games at 80 to 140fps, a cheaper 180Hz ultrawide could give you much of the same practical experience.

Where I think 240Hz becomes worthwhile is for somebody with a mixed game library. You can enjoy demanding games at whatever frame rate your GPU can produce, then switch into competitive titles and actually use the extra refresh rate.

Samsung’s older 34-inch Odyssey G55T was another example in the supplied comparison material, running at 165Hz and sitting at a lower price. Again, you are trading away refresh rate and some of Alienware’s overall refinement to save money.

At the opposite end are OLED ultrawides.

This is where the price difference becomes much more dramatic. Samsung’s OLED models and Alienware’s own QD-OLED ultrawides can deliver much better black levels, vastly faster pixel transitions and a far stronger HDR presentation.

If all you care about is image quality, OLED wins.

But image quality isn’t the only thing involved in a purchasing decision.

At around $699, the AW3426DWM can cost hundreds of dollars less than comparable OLED ultrawides. That difference could pay for a substantial GPU upgrade, more storage, a better chair, a new keyboard and mouse, or simply remain in your bank account.

I also think the conventional VA panel suits people who mix gaming with heavy desktop use. You can leave a browser, spreadsheet, CMS, editing interface or taskbar sitting on the screen for hours without spending mental energy thinking about whether you should move things around.

For me, that’s one of the biggest reasons this monitor has a clear place despite OLED being objectively better in several areas.

It is less spectacular, but also less demanding to own.

Price and Value in Australia

At the supplied Australian price of $699 AUD, I think the AW3426DWM makes its strongest argument.

Alienware normally isn’t the brand I associate with shopping on a tight budget, so seeing a 34-inch 240Hz ultrawide arrive below the psychological $1,000 mark immediately changes the conversation.

I wouldn’t call $699 cheap. You can buy a perfectly capable gaming monitor for significantly less money.

But this isn’t competing with ordinary 27-inch 1440p screens. You’re getting a large 21:9 panel, 3440 x 1440 resolution, 240Hz, adaptive sync, strong VA contrast, a proper adjustable stand and a three-year warranty.

Within that context, the price feels reasonable.

The question I would ask before buying isn’t simply whether you can find a cheaper monitor. You definitely can.

The better question is how many compromises you have to accept to save the difference.

If a $500-ish ultrawide provides 165Hz or 180Hz and you never play games above that range anyway, keeping the extra money makes sense. Alienware isn’t automatically better value just because the logo is more recognisable.

On the other hand, if you specifically want 240Hz at 3440 x 1440 and intend to keep the monitor for several years, paying an additional $100 or $150 for a product you prefer every single time you sit at the desk becomes much easier to justify.

The warranty adds to that argument.

Alienware lists a three-year limited warranty, and the supplied review information notes Dell’s Advanced Exchange coverage. A monitor is one of those products where warranty service can matter more than expected because a failed display leaves an enormous hole in your setup.

I would rather pay slightly more for a monitor with support I trust than save a small amount upfront and discover that dealing with a panel fault involves weeks of emails and shipping uncertainty.

There is also the longevity argument around refresh rate.

A decent monitor can outlast several GPU upgrades. If you buy a 240Hz display now but only reach 150fps in many of your current games, the additional headroom may become more useful when you eventually install a faster graphics card.

That doesn’t mean you should buy specifications you have no chance of using, but 240Hz at this resolution doesn’t feel absurdly excessive. There are already plenty of scenarios where a capable gaming PC can take advantage of it.

The AW3426DWM therefore sits in what I consider one of the more sensible parts of the performance curve. You’re well beyond entry-level monitor performance, but you haven’t entered the territory where every small improvement suddenly adds hundreds of dollars.

The Alienware AW3426DWM isn’t the monitor I would choose if money were irrelevant. OLED still has the obvious advantage when it comes to black levels, response time and proper HDR impact, while specialised competitive monitors can push refresh rates far beyond 240Hz.

But that isn’t really the point of this monitor.

The AW3426DWM works because it takes the features that matter most for everyday PC gaming and puts them together at a price that doesn’t feel completely detached from reality.

The 34-inch 3440 x 1440 format gives games real scale without turning your desk into a command centre. The 240Hz refresh rate provides enough headroom for fast competitive titles while still making sense for a broader mix of games. The VA panel’s 3,000:1 contrast ratio gives dark content significantly more depth than a typical IPS alternative, and adaptive sync helps everything remain smooth when your frame rate inevitably moves around.

After using it for both work and gaming, I also appreciate how normal it is to own.

There is no special panel-care routine occupying the back of my mind. I can leave static windows open through a workday, play games at night and treat the monitor like a monitor. For somebody whose gaming PC also doubles as their everyday computer, that simplicity has real value.

There are areas Alienware could improve. The USB hub needs more ports, 15W USB-C charging feels basic in 2026, the HDMI implementation has an annoying resolution limitation, and DisplayHDR 400 isn’t going to convince anyone who has experienced genuinely good HDR.

VA motion behaviour hasn’t completely disappeared either, even if I found it controlled enough not to become a major issue in normal gameplay.

None of those problems fundamentally change what the AW3426DWM gets right.

At $699 AUD, I think it sits in one of the best parts of the current ultrawide market: noticeably more capable and polished than many cheaper models, but far enough below OLED pricing that you don’t feel as though you’re spending half a PC budget on the display.

Would I choose it over a cheaper 165Hz ultrawide? Yes, assuming I had the GPU to make use of the additional refresh rate.

Would I choose it over an OLED purely for image quality? No.

Would I choose it over an OLED once price, desktop use and the way I actually use my PC every day are included in the decision? That becomes much harder, and I suspect that is exactly where Alienware wanted this monitor to land.

For gamers wanting to move into ultrawide without immediately jumping into four-figure territory, the AW3426DWM gets the fundamentals right. It is fast, immersive, easy to live with and reasonably priced for the hardware on offer.

Sometimes the best gaming monitor isn’t the one with the most impressive technology.

It’s the one you can actually justify buying.
