Motorola has launched the latest addition to its ever expanding G series, the moto g57, and it arrives with a very clear message. This is a phone built for real people who drop things, run out of battery, use their phone in the sun and expect it to just get on with the job.

In a market full of glass slabs that panic at the sight of a table edge, the moto g57 is doing something refreshingly sensible. It focuses on durability, battery life and everyday performance, then prices itself at a level that does not require a long conversation with your bank account.

Cameras that know their place

The headline feature is the 50MP main camera, using a Sony LYTIA 600 sensor backed by moto ai. In plain terms, it takes sharp, bright photos without needing a photography degree or twenty attempts. Quad Pixel technology helps in low light, which is where most mid tier phones usually give up and produce something resembling abstract art.

Alongside it sits an 8MP ultra wide camera for landscapes and group shots, plus a flicker sensor that quietly removes banding under artificial lighting. The 8MP front camera handles selfies and video calls without turning faces into wax models.

Google Photos editing tools are baked in, offering features like Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur, which are handy rather than gimmicky. They improve photos without screaming look at me.

Built to survive actual life

Motorola has leaned hard into durability here, and rightly so. The moto g57 meets MIL STD 810H standards, meaning it has been tested against drops, temperature extremes and pressure changes. Gorilla Glass 7i protects the front, offering improved resistance to scratches and impacts, while an IP64 rating adds protection from dust and splashes.

The vegan leather finish on the back is not just for looks. It improves grip, resists fingerprints and feels far less slippery than glossy glass. Finished in Pantone curated colours, it manages to look distinctive without looking silly.

This is a phone you can use without constantly thinking about what surface you are putting it on.

Performance that does not complain

Power comes from the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 processor with 5G support, paired with up to 12GB of RAM thanks to RAM Boost. The result is smooth everyday performance. Apps open quickly, multitasking is painless and casual gaming runs without drama.

Storage tops out at 128GB using UFS 2.2, which keeps things moving at a decent pace. It ships with Android 16 out of the box, and Motorola keeps the software clean. There is no bloat, no nonsense and no sense that you need to delete half the phone before you can enjoy it.

A screen that earns its keep

The 6.72 inch FHD plus display features a 120Hz refresh rate, which makes scrolling and gaming noticeably smoother. High Brightness Mode pushes visibility up to 1050 nits, making it usable outdoors, even under the sort of sun Australia specialises in.

Display Colour Boost helps reduce glare, and Water Touch 2.0 keeps the screen responsive when wet, which is surprisingly useful if you cook, clean or live anywhere near water. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and Hi Res Audio certification complete the entertainment package, delivering sound that is loud, clear and properly immersive.

Battery life done properly

The 5200mAh battery is rated for up to 47 hours of use, which translates to comfortably more than a full day for most users. Light to moderate use will push well beyond that. When it does need charging, 30W TurboPower gets things moving quickly.

Battery Care features manage background activity and charging habits, with support for up to 1000 charge cycles. This is clearly a phone designed to be kept for years, not replaced the moment the battery starts to sulk.

Software and security without the fluff

Android 16 brings improved privacy and security, while Motorola’s Hello UX allows users to customise gestures, colours and layouts without overwhelming them. Moto Secure, powered by ThinkShield, acts as a central hub for privacy and protection features.

Google Gemini is included for AI assisted tasks like writing, planning and searching, and Family Space allows parents to create child friendly profiles with screen time and app controls. Sensible features, sensibly implemented.

Australian availability

The moto g57 will be available in Australia from 8 January in PANTONE Corsair, PANTONE Fluidity and PANTONE Regatta. It carries an RRP of $299 and will be sold through JB Hi Fi, Officeworks, The Good Guys, Big W, Harvey Norman, Bing Lee, MobileCiti and Amazon.

In short, the moto g57 does not try to be clever. It tries to be good. And in a world of overcomplicated smartphones, that might be the cleverest move of all.
