BYD is poised to shake up the affordable plug-in hybrid market in Australia with the SEALION 5, arriving early in 2026. Designed as the most wallet-friendly DM-I SUV in the brand’s line-up, it is pitched squarely at government, corporate and private fleets, as well as young families who want the feel of an EV without the range anxiety.

Why The SEALION 5 Matters

This is not a gadget for status, it is a tool for saving money and cutting emissions. The SEALION 5 aims to deliver markedly lower tailpipe output than many older fleet cars, with running costs that should make accountants nod approvingly. On a charged battery the car can return sub 2.0 L/100km fuel consumption, and its electric-only capability makes it ideal for urban duty cycles where petrol use is minimal. All of which means lower cost per kilometre, less wear on brakes and engine, and fewer headaches for fleet managers.

Powertrain And Real-World Efficiency

Under the bonnet you get BYD’s DM-i Super Hybrid system, which pairs a high-efficiency 1.5 litre petrol engine with an electric motor. The experience is deliberately EV-like, but with the reassurance of a combustion engine when you want to drive beyond the city. The Essential model delivers a combined 156 kW output and a 12.9 kWh battery that provides up to 71 km of electric range by NEDC measure, and a total range approaching 1,000 km. Step up to the Premium and you get an 18.3 kWh battery that extends electric range to around 100 km NEDC, combined fuel consumption down to about 1.3 L/100km, and a combined range just over 1,030 km.

Interior, Tech And Practicality

Inside the SEALION 5 is modern and sensible rather than fussy. The centrepiece is BYD’s DiLink touchscreen, 12.8 inches on higher spec cars and 10.1 inches on the Essential, backed up by an 8.8 inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full 360 degree camera for tight parking and a Digital Key system that lets you unlock and start the car with a smartphone or NFC card. Boot capacity is 463 litres with seats up, expanding to 1,410 litres when you need to ferry prams, kit or camping gear. Ground clearance sits at 170 mm and the turning circle is compact, so suburban streets and gravel side roads are both within its comfort zone.

Safety, Availability And The Bottom Line

Safety equipment is comprehensive, with seven airbags, a 360 degree camera and a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems as standard. The SEALION 5 is being presented as a practical stepping stone for businesses moving toward lower emissions, and a pragmatic family car for those feeling the squeeze of rising fuel costs. Launch is scheduled for early 2026, with orders opening from December and pricing to be announced closer to launch. Expressions of interest are being taken now for those who want to be first in line.
