The Biggest Tech Fails of 2024

This year, tech giants and start-ups alike have stumbled with some highly anticipated releases. From poorly received ads to devices that didn’t meet expectations, here’s a look at the top five biggest tech fails of 2024.
5. Apple’s “Crush” iPad Pro Ad
Apple’s attempt to promote its 2024 iPad Pro took a surprising turn with their “Crush” commercial. In the ad, a hydraulic press crushes traditional artist tools—pianos, guitars, paints—symbolising the iPad’s power as a “replacement” for these creative tools. But for many artists, it felt like an insult. Critics called it tone-deaf, especially given concerns over AI replacing creative jobs. The backlash was so intense that Apple turned off YouTube comments and eventually issued an apology. Samsung jumped at the opportunity, creating its own ad for the Galaxy S9 tablet with the tagline, “Creativity cannot be crushed,” poking fun at Apple’s blunder.
4. Rabbit R1 AI Device
The Rabbit R1, a $199 handheld AI assistant, looked promising with its AI-powered camera and voice-activated features. However, it didn’t live up to expectations. Reviews noted that it struggled to recognise even simple objects, while its battery life was far too short for practical use. The device was also criticised for its awkward scroll wheel, small screen, and poor audio quality, which made it feel more like an overpriced toy than a useful gadget.
3. Apple Vision Pro
Apple’s Vision Pro, a highly anticipated VR headset priced at $3,500, left many buyers disappointed. Even after custom fittings at Apple stores, many users reported that the headset was uncomfortable to wear for more than 30 minutes. Plus, its limited selection of apps meant popular services like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify were unavailable, restricting the headset’s functionality. For a product so expensive, buyers expected more. Instead, it felt like an unfinished product with limited usability, falling short of Apple’s usual standards.
2. Fisker Ocean Electric SUV
The Fisker Ocean, an electric SUV featuring an eco-friendly solar roof, attracted plenty of attention before launch. However, it quickly ran into trouble, especially after tech reviewer Marques Brownlee highlighted some serious issues. Brownlee’s review noted several flaws, including frequent warning lights, malfunctioning software, and an unreliable key fob. Frustrated with these problems, Brownlee titled his review, “This is the worst car I’ve ever reviewed.” Fisker’s reputation took a further hit when they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy shortly after, leaving customers uncertain about the future of their repairs and software updates.
1. Humane AI Pin
The Humane AI Pin, a wearable device created by former Apple employees, was pitched as a futuristic alternative to smartphones. However, it’s widely considered 2024’s biggest tech failure. Reviews criticised its sluggish voice commands, poor projector quality in various lighting conditions, and heavy weight that dragged on users’ clothes. Its two- to four-hour battery life was another major drawback. Priced at $700 with an additional $24 monthly subscription fee, the Humane AI Pin quickly lost favour. To top it off, customers received an email warning them to stop using the charging case due to a battery fire hazard, sealing its reputation as a spectacular flop.
These tech fails underscore the challenges of innovation and serve as reminders that even the most hyped products can miss the mark in the Biggest Tech Fails of 2024.
