How to Take Drone Photos

Good drone photos start with a lawful flight you can manage safely and a clear idea of the image you want. Plan the composition before take-off, check the light and conditions, and keep enough attention on the aircraft. A camera setting or advertised flight time is not a safety margin.

Check whether the flight can happen

For Australian recreational flying, CASA’s rules include daylight operation, visual line of sight and limits around people and airspace. Check the current rules and a CASA-verified safety app for the location. Landowner or park permission can be a separate requirement.

Commercial or other operations can have different requirements. Do not assume permission because a drone is small, a location looks empty or another person has flown there. A sunset plan must still fit the permitted daylight operation.

Choose the view from the ground

Identify a subject and what an elevated view would add: a pattern, a curve in the landscape or a different relationship between foreground and background. Decide where you can operate without distracting yourself or others.

Think through the launch, recovery and a reason to abandon the shot. Check the manufacturer’s weather and operating limits for the exact aircraft. Do not plan the return around its maximum advertised flight duration.

Use photographic controls deliberately

Learn the camera controls while stationary before flying. Check exposure and the horizon, and compare alternative framing rather than assuming the highest altitude gives the strongest picture. Megapixel count alone does not guarantee sharpness or image quality.

If the aircraft supports still-image bracketing, panoramas or raw files, understand their requirements before using them. Slow-motion video and hyperlapse are different outputs from a still photograph.

Review before making another flight

On the ground, inspect focus, motion blur, exposure and unwanted details. Keep an original file before editing. Adjust colour or contrast to suit the photograph without using editing to conceal a problem that needs a different capture.

Make one considered change for the next lawful flight rather than repeatedly launching without a plan. For equipment considerations, see the beginner drone guide, then verify the exact model’s current specifications and requirements.
