Leasing can suit someone who values a defined vehicle arrangement, but its advantages depend on the contract. Check total payments, use restrictions, end obligations and early-exit terms before treating a lower advertised payment as a saving.
Identify the arrangement
Ask whether the quote is for a lease, a novated lease through an employer or a loan with a balloon payment. Those arrangements are not interchangeable. Moneysmart’s salary-packaging and car-loan guidance provides a starting point for distinguishing employment arrangements from borrowing.
Write down who owns the car during the agreement, what you must pay at its end and which options you actually have. Do not assume every lease permits an unconditional return or automatically transfers ownership.
Where a lease may be convenient
An agreement can provide a planned replacement point and, where specified, bundled running-cost administration. That may make budgeting easier for some people. Check which amounts are fixed, which are estimates and how unused or overspent allowances are reconciled.
A newer vehicle may be under warranty, but that does not mean servicing, tyres, damage and every repair are included. Ask for the exclusions and service requirements rather than inferring low maintenance costs from the vehicle’s age.
Where restrictions can matter
Review any kilometre limit, condition assessment, modification restrictions and extra charges. Use the contract’s Australian units and figures; a generic US annual mileage allowance is not a term of your agreement.
Request an early-exit example, including what happens if your job changes under a novated arrangement. Check responsibility for insurance, excesses and a vehicle that is damaged or written off.
Compare equal periods and end positions
Compare upfront costs, regular payments, fees, running costs and final obligations over the same planned period. For buying, include remaining debt and an uncertain resale value. For leasing, include the actual residual, return or purchase conditions.
Do not assume a salary-packaging tax saving applies to you without an individual calculation. Keep the written quote and assumptions so the comparison can be reviewed.
For the broader purchase comparison, see leasing versus buying a car. This checklist focuses on the conditions to resolve before signing a lease.
