Choose the smallest car that comfortably meets your regular passenger, luggage and access needs. Body-style labels are only a starting point: two SUVs or hatchbacks can differ substantially in usable space. A showroom check with your actual equipment is more useful than assuming a larger badge means a better fit.
Write down a normal week
Record how many people usually travel, whether they need child restraints, and what you carry with the seats occupied. Separate regular requirements from an unusual annual trip. A car that is convenient every day may be a better fit than one chosen around a rare load, provided you have a workable plan for those exceptions.
Measure the parking space
Check your garage opening, usable length and width, and clearance for mirrors, doors and the tailgate. Include storage or a charging cable where relevant. Ask for the exact vehicle dimensions, then test parking and access rather than relying on the outline of an empty parking bay.
Try the cabin with your passengers
Set the driving seat to your normal position before checking rear legroom. Bring the child restraints you intend to use and confirm installation requirements with their instructions and the vehicle manual. Check door openings, access to buckles and whether an adult can use the remaining seat. A nominal five-seat capacity does not establish that your particular seating arrangement works.
Load the boot as you would use it
Bring a pram, suitcase or other bulky item to the inspection. Check the opening, loading height and usable shape with the seats in their normal positions. Quoted cargo litres can help shortlist vehicles, but do not establish that a particular object fits. Secure the load and remain within the vehicle’s payload limits.
Compare safety by exact model and rating year
Use ANCAP’s rating guidance for the exact variant and build period. Its “TESTED” datestamp identifies the assessment criteria used; similar star ratings from different years are not automatically like-for-like. Size alone does not answer which car has the safety features you need.
Test the trade-offs on your route
During a suitable test drive, check visibility, turning and parking, passenger comfort and the controls you use most. Compare insurance, servicing, tyres and energy or fuel costs using current quotes. A compact car is not automatically cheaper to run than every larger model, and an SUV badge does not guarantee all-wheel drive or off-road suitability.
Keep a short checklist for each candidate and reject those that fail a non-negotiable need. Choose from the cars that pass the practical checks, rather than buying spare size that makes daily driving or parking harder.
