Every year since 2008 thousands of Aussies lodge their vote as to what their favourite beer of the year is. This vote is then whittled down to a top 100 list, famously known as the GABS (Greatest Australasian Beer SpecTAPular) Hottest 100 Craft Beers. GABS is also known for throwing its annual craft beer festival around the country. Where the country’s best beer brewers showcase their finest hoppy creations and everyone comes along to drink, sing and enjoy them all.
Over the years the list has been dominated by iconic Aussie beers including Little Creatures Pale Ale and Stone and Woods Pacific Ale. The last two years though there’s been a new beer on the block that has taken the top spot and they really have come out of ‘nowhere’.
Mountain Culture Brewing Co. was only born a few years ago in 2019 in the quiet town of Katoomba which sits at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Mountains in NSW. DJ McCready and his wife Harriet had decided to push the green button on setting up their own brewery right before the COVID pandemic hit, Perfect timing! This time in isolation though gave them plenty of time to perfect the perfect beer.

Fast forward to the present day and this beer, their Status Quo Pale Ale, has been voted Australia’s favourite beer two years in a row! During this time they’ve also managed to increase their production by nearly 4000%. Going from being able to brew just 60,000 litres a year in the Katoomba brewpub, to now eight million litres with the expansion of their brand new Emu Plains factory. This has now established them within the top two percent of independent beer producers in Australia and allows them to supply over 1000 independent bottle shops and bars across Australia.
Mountain Culture’s dedication to creativity and constant pursuit of improvement has seen them create over 300 limited-release beers since their inception. One of their latest releases is an Australian Pale Lager that was launched (literally) on a rocket in Sydney not so long ago (head to their Instagram page to see how it all went down).
With this much attention, awards and hype around their beers, we don’t think it’ll be too much longer before they become a household name. In the meantime, be sure to get your hands on some of their prized creations while you still can.
